After much skepticism regarding battery-powered yard tools, following a family example I took the plunge and bought the multi-head attachment-ready string trimmer, along with the brush cutter, pole saw and hedge trimmer attachments. I am impressed with not only the user-friendly design of these tools, but their robust construction and inherent power as well. The quiet operation, lack of fuel and lube oil mess, and greatly reduced maintenance are real pluses. The 56-volt power supply seems equal to the best I got out of my previous propane-powered unit. While I'm a bit apprehensive about the overall battery life and the prospect of expensive replacements some years down the road (as well as the environmental impact of mining/processing the lithium for the batteries), I'm very pleased to have one less internal combustion engine to have to maintain, and at least these electric tools don't pollute the air while they are operating!
I wanted to give electric a try. I've heard many speak highly of Ego, so I went out to buy the MST1603. I was amazed with the power and run time. It definitely exceeds gas. If you are on the fence between gas or electric, try Ego. You will be amazed.
Unit was easy to assembly. I was concerned about the weight but have found that the shoulder strap minimizes that concern. The power is comparable to my old gas trimmer. This unit is a dream to use. I am glad that I went to battery powered system.
Very powerful, The easiest string trimmer to replace the line in I have ever used! A little heavy! I would rather have a heavy tool instead of poor performing tool that can't whack a weed to save it's life! Or dies before you get out of the backyard because of a weak battery!
Very versatile if you get other implements for the drive head. More powerful than expected, the powerload is extremely nice and easy to use. Got the POWER+ Carbon Fiber 12" Brush Cutter Attachment, it also works perfectly as needed to trim growing branches/spurs around the trees.
This unit is a little of the heavy side, but it comes with a shoulder strap which makes it much easier to use. It is very powerful. We have only used it once so far and it only used one of the five bars on the battery. VERY happy with this purchase!
I used this to clean out a heavily overgrown area in my daughter's yard last week. I went through 3 battery charges during that time and it used very little of the cord and cut through multiple layers of dead undergrowth. The undergrowth was 4 to 5" of matted weeds. You couldn't ask for a better test of the ability of the string trimmer. And you can separate the trimmer from the powerhead and do all sorts of things.
good power, battery is a little small, but it's handy to have for quick yard work instead of a heavier battery. needs a 6ah or 8ah to really trim any amount of yard. thought the respooling system would be a gimmick, but it's absolutely amazing. It really needs a battery meter near the power selector switch. I can see the charge lights on the battery while using every other Ego tool I own, but this one has it behind the back. I often run the batteries right to a single red bar because there is no easily visible meter.
Being a lifelong user of 2-stroke weed wackers, this one is a little quieter, has a stronger string, is not more powerful, is not lighter, and cannot run as long without multiple batteries charging. But it wacks weeds just fine, and no oil/gas mix nor spark plugs and spark arrestors. Just expensive batteries.
The trimmer itself and the interchangeable tools are great. The only negative is that these are built for tall people. Making it adjustable for a petite gal would make it more ergonomic and more comfortable to use. Would be easier to balance without needing to lift shoulders.
