Escape From Alcatraz

I REALLY like this film. Personally I think while the movie is based on a true story, it's a somewhat fictional portrayal of an actual event. Ultimately, I don't think anyone knows really what went through the minds of the escapees but the movie does a great job at building the crew and suspense that ultimately made the escape. The Alcatraz escape is probably one of the greatest mysteries of our time as their bodies were never found and no trace of them materialized. With that said, the film does a very good job at the elaborate escape attempt. Clint discovers the salty corrosive nature of the sea softens the building material in his cell. So throughout the film, Clint devises a way to dig out of his cell and conceal the work. He relays what to do to other cellmates who are in on the escape plan. The film depicts a story of the harsh prison life, living with other cellmates and the realities of an unfair system that continues to punish people well beyond their redemption. But the core of the movie, about the escape is rather fascinating. IQ, mechanical aptitude, and most importantly 'biding one's time' is key here. Overall the movie is very interesting. Personally, my second favorite to 'The Shawshank Redemption'. I also find the movie's take to be the most accurate portrayal of the entire escape scenario. Every film I've seen always alludes to whether the individuals could survive the swim from Alcatraz to the San Francisco mainland/Angel island. In this film, it seems to be the best case on the technical aspects the escapees applied and how they formulated to construct the bespoke materials and plan. A great movie to enjoy and probably one of the better "prison" movies out there BESIDES Shawshank. Viewers may want to know there are shower scenes of mild male nudity and next to zero foul language, however some racial references are used and might offend in this day and age. The movie is rated PG and was appropriate for the time of production. The blu-ray disc is a step-up from previous versions but I find the dark, black scenes to be still a bit grainy. If you can, catch this 4k/Blu-ray combo on sale, ~$15.00, by all means, pick it up! Kino-Lorber isn't my favorite distributor and it's NOT Criterion level, but well worth the investment.

If you love classic Clint Eastwood, this Kino Lorber 4K edition of Escape from Alcatraz is definitely worth picking up for the collection. The atmospheric tension of the prison is served incredibly well by the Dolby Vision color grading, which really makes the deep shadows and cold concrete walls stand out compared to old standard definitions. The audio is incredibly crisp, especially the quiet, eerie ambient sounds of the cell blocks. It also comes packed with a second standard Blu-ray disc and some fantastic new interviews and commentary features that look into how the movie was made on location. Some scenes look a bit digitally smoothed over, but overall, the added clarity and depth make this the best the film has looked on home media. Highly recommended for fans of the movie!

Kino Lorber products look to be on the cheaper side of things right now so I picked up a couple titles and this was one I had to get, the discs were loose upon delivery overall everything is ok.
