Just bought this and although the price was higher than most, it is perfect. I wish I had purchased this earlier. It is perfect, sturdy, easy to assemble and works great. I put all my vegetable peels, coffee grounds and spoiled fruit into this composter. It is convenient and secure. Love it!!
I've only had this product a short time, but I am already thrilled with it. It is durable, heats up quickly, easy to open and it was very easy to assemble. The insulation and otherwise thickness of the walls certainly gives this a durability that others just don't have plus it will work throughout the year. Well worth the money as you won't have to buy another one - ever. Why waste money on one that is supposed to spin or turn (and usually is too hard to) when you never have to turn this one at all! It's a no-brainer people.
I have two of these. They work well. One of them is a couple of years old and we needed a minor part replaced. I went to the manufacturer's website and they had it together enough to collect info and forward me to the US support. The parts are in the mail. Nobody said anything about $s. I'm impressed.
This is my 2nd Aerobin. I bought my first one a month ago and filled it up. I filled this one up too, but I will be able to go back in a few days and add another large load (probably half the bin from my experience with the first one). This is so much easier loading my kitchen waste and yard waste into a unit that is at the edge of my property instead of in the woods. I have time to layer my compost properly and water it as I am not getting attacked by mosquitoes or into poison ivy.
I love this composter. I have pine forest for most of my yard and way too much yard waste has been loaded into the woods. To the point where I cannot possibly turn the pile more than a couple times a year. I loaded up this composter with a good half of my leaves and grass and when my mower (who is supposed to be using a mulching mower) dumped his last grass load onto my good-sized pile, I did not even cry this time. I'm getting a 2nd one today. I will be putting it next to my first one, just on my side of the property line and I don't have to worry about turning it ever, once I load it up. I had no idea how much water compost needs to cook properly. Mine is hot and steamy and full now. I keep a tiny pile of leaves next to it, and I toss all my kitchen scraps and weeds (especially seedy ones) in with a layer of leaves, some old compost dirt and give the whole thing a good dose of water and I am done, no turning and getting a major dose of bacteria and mold on myself. And my woods are just woods again.
I am very happy with my purchase. Money well spent. I found it easy to assemble, and durable. Very thick walls to insulate the bin so it ""cooks down"" the compost fast. When I open the lid it is hot inside and steaming. Having it has made yard work easy because I don't need to drag the lawn clippings to the woods. Food scraps and shredded paper now go in the bin instead of regular trash.
I made compost at our local community garden in a line of seven bins for ten years, trying this and that and using the turning-over from bin to bin (for aeration) as my exercise program. After a few years I used perforated plastic field drain pipe as a central vent in the first three bins to manage the temperature and aerate the compost. This helped greatly, but the process, and the results, were slow and imperfect, especially in terms of temperature management. I also built an extension to a Waste Management composting operation at a major landfill, and got to see how they do things, so I feel that I can speak with some authority on composting.\n\n The Aerobin 400 is a very effective device for the home composter, is very fast and makes a uniformly excellent product. I have already gotten a wheelbarrow full of mature compost out of it after buying it a couple of months ago. The automatic temperature control provided by the air circulator and the insulated walls works great. It is 100 deg F here today, and the compost is at its usual round-the-clock 125-130 degrees, cooking away with its usual pleasant smell like beer brewing. You have to open it to enjoy the smell. It is rat-proof, pleasant-looking in the corner of my elaborate garden. Assembly and setup took 30 mins. The instructions were good. I have a ten dollar bale of rice straw in my shed to regulate the green/brown ratio and whenever I smell ammonia I just add a little more straw and it smells nice again the next day. It's worth every penny, especially compared with the other composters on the market that do not even begin to live up to their sales pitches at all. I am very impressed with this design. The only drawback is the clumsy latching arrangement for the two access panels at the bottom, but they work fine once you find a way to close and latch them easily. \n\n Ed Clemow. \n\n
The color is a little too green for my taste. Would Have liked a more dull color that would not stand out so much.; grey, brown?
This bin makes great compost. The instructions are great but my advice is to fill up the bin as the weight of biomass helps the bin heat up and break down faster. It makes the best mulch and quickly too! But if you think the bin is Rodent Proof. It is NOT! I have recently discovered 2 rats chew through the base (next to the lechant tank) and feast on the table scraps. After emptying the bin, I discovered the hole (see picture number 3). I have patched the hole and wired up the base using bird cage wire. I originally had the base sitting on a mixture of compact gravel and pavers only the rats dug through the compact gravel. Just wondered if people had similar issues? I have taken some photos of my newly secured base. The extra wire has been balled into the cavity under the base to stop movement under there. The whole base has been secured with a sheet of wire and mounted on the concrete path shown. Now those pesky rats won't be able to get in!! You can view pictures of my 'wiring' project of the Aerobin on the following forum: http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/forum/aerobin2/#78786 I have posted photos on the daleysfruit forum as I can't seem to be able to attach photos to this. Hope this helps! Please don't view this as an attack on the Aerobin. I think it is a wonderful tool for breaking down the green biomass into fantastic mulch. It just has some limitations and one is that it is not Rodent Proof...maybe slightly resistant but after being in its position for 6 months the vermin managed to dig between the pavers and live in the cavity under the bin whilst they chewed through the base. The bin has now been housed on a concrete path and wired up. Now let us see those pesky rats chew through concrete!!
The stem pipes and aereator flanges did not arrive in with the rest of the pieces. I spoke to someone Saturday, and she assured me that she would look into the matter. I love my first unit, and anticipate doing the same when the 2nd unit is complete. Thanks
