Eyes Without a Face (Criterion Collection)

Fun film with great picture. Any film lover will enjoy this.

I saw this movie for the first time on TCM. Anthony Bourdain was the guest host and he got to pick the movies.(With Robert Osborne) I can't even remember the second movie because I was still chair shocked by this one! I watch TCM all the time and this was a first run movie.It isn't for the very nervous unless you love to jump and gasp at the same time.By jump I mean that horror movie jump--more like semi-controlled body movements.This is unusually creepy and I got the feeling (throughout) that some over the top (or edge) 'genius' with enough status,education and privacy could ..... The story is violent. It isn't for people who want fiction mixed with violence.Its fiction but it has the feel and story line of a horrible reality--the news stories that disturb us just when we think 'IT' cannot HAPPEN.The main character and his mentor (or rube) are the worst kind of evil--is there a 'worst' kind? They are continually breathless in their pursuit of perfection and a sort of redemption--they don't seem to need anything for sustenance...or conscience. The girl is the light and watch how she acts and reacts with (a) soul and grace.She's living outside the vile,twisted 'rules' set up around her.The main characters happily justify their 'genius' and skill for getting away....just watch.The acting,sets lighting are superb.I own several Criterion Collection movies and some of them were made by film makers who were overwhelmed by the shock of bad reviews and empty movie theaters.They have since become classics. Thank you very much.

As with any criterion collection release, you know you're getting something special in this package. As for the movie itself, I'm not one who feels the need to revisit movies often. Naturally, I also don't feel the need to purchase often. This horror movie is one I felt differently about. I first saw it several years ago on the original Criterion Release. It's a rare combination of mood, pedigree, and terror---and its images have stuck with me throughout the years. Definitely a movie that you can view more than once. If you're not feeling squeamish after watching the movie, I dare you to take a peek at the documentary extra that recounts a day in the life of a Parisian abattoir or slaughterhouse. If that doesn't make you squirm, congratulations; you're a robot.
