I prefer playing board games over video games because it brings friends and family together, in the same place, at the same time. It's why I own over 100 board games, and only around 50 video games. I only keep the games that I like playing. There's times when I'm by myself, but still want to play a board game, which is why I typically buy board games that can be played solitaire. Twilight Inscription is a game that fits all of those requirements. It's a great game to play with a group of up to 8 people, but it's also a great game to play solitaire. I wasn't expecting the rules to be as complicated as they are, but they're not nearly as complicated as some of my other games. After learning the rules, which took about 20 minutes, I played solitaire to familiarize myself with the overall gameplay mechanics, and discovered that this is a fantastic game. It was definitely worth adding to my collection, just for the solo experience alone. After playing with a group of people, I found the game to be equally as fun. The replayability is off the charts, and I can't imagine ever having two games that played the same. Having said that, I do have one little issue with the game, specifically with the components. I'm not a fan of the dry-erase chalk markers. I don't see them lasting very long, which is the case for any type of magic marker. I would have rather the game included a pad of paper score sheets, much like Hadrian's Wall, which is another fantastic tabletop game. To solve my issue with the included dry-erase chalk markers, I scanned all of the score pads, so when the markers do stop working, I have a backup plan. I'll edit the images, change the background color from black to white, reprint the score pads, and just use pencils. I'll wait until the included markers stop working first. Aside from that tiny issue, I'm still very happy that I bought this game, and it will stay in my collection for a very long time.
Twilight Inscription is so many things in one game. It's an Expansive Roll and Write game, and it does that extremely well. It's a great competitive game for up to 8 players, and it does 8 players just as easily as it does 3. It's also a great Solo Game! It brings along with it lots of Twilight Imperium lore, which makes this a fun addition to your collection if you are already a fan of that universe of games (which I am not, but now I'm interested in playing other games in this univers). The only thing this game isn't is Fast. Even the Solo game takes longer than the "Roll and Write" description eludes to. But you are not likely to be disappointed by the likely 2 to 3 hours playtime (for new players). There is virtually no downtime for players since all players act simultaneously. It seems expensive for a Roll and Write, but you definitely get what you pay for in this game!
