Farm Innovators Cast Aluminum Floating Submergible Tank De-Icer (4 Pack)

We use this to keep our birdbath free of ice in the winter. It works very well for this purpose. I wish they were not quite so expensive and lasted longer. Expect to get no more than 3 or 4 years per unit.

LOVE these. They last forever, uses very little energy compared to other types of heaters and has a thermostat so it turns off when the temp is right. I made a floating insulated trough cover from a piece of foam house insulation for added temp loss. Has endured my horses chewing on it, keeps the water perfect temperature even when the outside temp is -20 where I live.

This birdbath heater is exactly what I was looking for. Sinks to the bottom and stays there. Keeps the ice away even on below zero days.

The best, i had this exact heater for 30 years before i needed a new one, just descale it with vinegar before storing for the summer, inside, if there is white scale buildup on the aluminum.

Great system, until the temperatures drop below freezing, when the water nipples freeze solid, and I'm back to carrying and refilling poultry water founts placed on a cookie tin warmer. This year, I bought this submersible de-icer, and it arrived in the midst of a week of freezing temperatures- so cold that the water in the cooler had a skim of ice on it. That evening, I broke the ice, and placed the deicer in the bottom of the jug. The next morning, the cooler was defrosted, and the chickens were as happy as I was!
