I have been using this for 6 months after one of my miniature horses had sand colic. He refused to eat other brands of psyllium, but my vet told me about the Equi Aid Natural Psyllium which she said her horse loved. She was right, all 4 horses love it!
I've been using this brand for a few years now. and have been using Psyllium 7 days a month for over 40 years! have 8-12 horses at any given time. And no stones! No colic! I'm a believer!
In South Florida where pasture is more like tiny grass sprigs in a sand pit ... this is a monthly necessity. Love the product. Haven't had a horse (or pony - and mine are picky!) turn their nose up at it yet. We feed it once a month for a week and are confident the sand isn't a problem.
On our barns random fecal check 5 horses were found to have sand. The vet recommended we do a spot check ourselves to have a baseline. Well, of course my horse had about a tablespoon of sand come out of a handful sample of manure, how much more is still inside him? I couldnt believe it. I knew he was a dirt eater and is on treatment for ulcers due to frequent "tummy aches" and felt the sand could also be contributing, so as a group we purchased and treated all the 5 horses. To my relief one week later my horse was totally "sand free" on recheck. I will definitely keep checking him throughout the year and use this again. Taste gets a 4, because two horses were hesitant to eat it the first couple days, but were finishing it up by day 7.
ok with that being said-I think they could lower the price by just putting the product into a bag and get rid of the plastic bucket. once you open the bucket-you cannot reseal it, so you have to store it in other containers anyway- but so far this is the lowest price I have found on 50lbs of psyllium and the horses seem to like it. I would also like to comment on the 'expertise rating'. I am not a trainer, but I am defiantly more advanced than intermediate. I wouldn't call myself an expert by any means, only I do have a vast knowledge of horses. perhaps 'advanced' would be more appropriate.
I have recently started giving this to my 4 year old gelding. He pooped like crazy the first couple days and seems to do well on it every month.
Less additives than other brands, it's 99% psyllium, and all our horses eat all the pellets.Best sand colic preventative avail!
It is nearly impossible to get my mini to eat psyllium. This is the first psyllium I have been able to give him, that he will actually eat. I highly recommend it for picky eaters!
I bought this product for my two mares because my vet was concerned about sand colic. Both mares readily ate and I did not need to add to grain. The product has a measuring cup in the container so it is easy to measure out and feed.
My horse is an extremely picky eater, he will not eat powders, granular types, etc. Even with treats he will turn down many things! We live in FL, so basically the "soil" is sand, so this is a MUST to make sure the sand is removed. He eats up all of the pellets, and I have been giving this to him for 2 years now, no problems. I get the buckets, even though I get his other supplements in smartpaks, because it is a lot cheaper that way. I asked a rep about it, and they said that is how the manufacturer would allow them to price it. Oh well! It's only for 7 days, I just put them in little Glad plastic snack containers and dump it in at the same time as his smartpaks. Highly recommend to anyone in a sandy environment, and with a picky eater.
