Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray)

It is sometimes hard to remember that this series takes us along the longer path from outbreak to social breakdown. Unlike the parent series, where it was essentially in the blink of an eye, or more directly, the span of a coma. The leap from A to "Z" (Or "W"!) was instant. Now, we have to see the breakdown as it occurs. Knowing the direction it's headed AND why it's headed there. Having to live through the confusion yet knowing what they don't know. Frustrating indeed. Yet, it is headed in the same direction, just a different path. This season is the deliberate plodding towards the same world and we finally get a real true taste of that in the finale, even though we've had insights from the very first episode. It finds it's traction eventually, and I feel, leaves one wanting more. So, it is, in my opinion, a must have to complete the other series. It ended strongly, and promises to enhance and not compete with the parent series.

I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead but was hesitant to give this a try since a lot of people say it doesn't live up to the original series. Unfortunately that is true. The big thing that sets it apart from TWD isn't just that it takes place on the other side of the US, but takes place at the start of the pandemic, where TWD starts after everything breaks down. While some think TWD moves too slow, this series moves to fast. Also, the casting is just terrible. One of the things I found endearing about TWD is you had a group of people come together, protect each other and form relationships - people that would not have done so before. In FTWD the exact opposite happens. While granted people respond differently and human nature can be our worst enemy, these people are messed up. The "blended" dysfunctional family can't even get it together. Who would have thought anyone would make Laurie and Rick look like the best parents ever. I'm sorry, but Kim Dickens is horrible in this. I have not seen her in anything before but I think this is the series biggest mistake in casting. She only has one facial expression and tone of voice. Is she every afraid? You can't tell. Is she ever angry? Beats me. Does she struggle with decisions and justifying what she does? Who knows. Also, the dialogue is pretty one dimensional. Don't expect any great monologues. I pretty much just decided to start this after finding out Morgan and Dwight switch over, so I hope it gets good eventually.
