I bought this THEN read the reviews and no one liked, especially the English Sci-Fi reviewers. After watching disc I come to the conclusion that they have a clothes hanger in their backs. It is closer to the DeLaurentis Flash Gordon movie or the SyFy series Eureka (not was well written, but like Peabody's Improbably History or Fracture Fair Tales). This Flash (he's real name is Steve) is the reluctant hero (Buster Crabbe played the gun-ho hero in the serials). This Dale Arden is a strong, feminist female who doesn't faint at every creak in the wall. This Hans Zarchov is more like Happy Happgood in the Ray from Mars serial. He's smart, but also the comic relief. There are no rocket ships here. It's a bubble portal generated by Ming the Benevolent Father (and believe me he's still Merciless) that were first made and discovered by Flash's father, Professor Gordon. Aura, Ming's daughter, still has a thing for flash and is still a brat. There's also a native girl fighter from Mongo that now lives with Flash and Dale (taking turns at each others home). Just like in the serial there are cheap effects and funny shaped men called Hawk Men or Forrest Men and they live outside the main city on Mongo and Ming's hold is pure water. There's little of it and he owns it. The main plot is Flash looking for his dad who vanished in the bubble and is held somewhere on Mongo. The sub plots are Ming creating bubbles and sending people or things to Earth to capture Flash or kill people. It's silly fun. Dale is a dish. Flash is a hunk. The Mongo gal gives Zena a run for her money. Warning. This is NOT 2001. It is NOT Forbidden Planet. This is NOT Contiuum. This is a silly Canadian sci-fi that doesn't take itself serioiusly.
good series
I liked the idea of this show but the low budget really ruined it, in my opinion. The only reason I got this is because I have a Flash Gordon collection; so I get anything on DVD that has Flash on it. It's a real shame that they couldn't have done better with this. I liked the cast and the modern take just the rest was not up to snuff.
