Ever since EE school, Fluke has always been my go-to multimeter in the last 3 decades for electronics work. But it has always been limited to bench meters, I don't have the same need for high accuracy for portable use and my 8 portable multimeters has been other brands like Sanwa, Extech, and disposable Harbor Freight which I use on-the-go. I have a NIST calibrated voltage standard, I know my Sanwa and Extech meters are all within spec (+/- 1-3%), but never spot on. I decided to purchase the 179 (non-NIST) as a more robust handheld meter, out-of-the-box, it is the only meter that is spot on even at its highest resolution at multiple reference voltages. It doesn't have the resolution of the bench meters, but I thought the meter have every bit of the quality that is worthy of the Fluke name.
I originally purchased this while I was in Electronics Engineering and Robotics Automation schooling. I never would have imagined I would use it on a day to day basis outside of my career and schooling. Perfect for automotive applications. I cannot tell you durable this thing is and how many times I have dropped it on the hard concrete garage floor diagnosing electrical drains on my truck. The Hold and backlit features are second to none. No need to go back multiple times to remember what you measured. I highly recommend this model. Helps me on my day to day basis with my current job diagnosing alarm systems as well as 66 blocks. Works well for high and low voltage applications.
I have had my 179 for a year or so now and I am very impressed with this unit. This meter replaced my perfectly working 112, which now stays home for trouble shooting around the house while my 179 goes to the job and puts money in my pocket. Someone once told me "you are only as good as your tools", and having the 179 on the job gives me the confidence to trust my readings. I am super happy, with all of my fluke purchases.
This meter is great! I work as a systems control technician and i have to say this meter is both user friendly and very reliable. I primarily use this meter on Automation controls to trouble shoot and perform point to point inspections on hvac controls. But I also use this meter on vfds, motors, actuators and micro controllers. If your looking for a durable meter that can do a lot, this one is it.
I have a laptop and PC repair shop in Iran. Although it is very hard to find fluke products here (due to the sanctions) let alone parts and accessories, but buying 179 totally worth it. In my diagnosis I never question the reading and speed and accuracy of this meter saves a lot of time.
The 179 has the features to diagnose 98% of the problems a maintenance tech in a manufacturing plant is likely to encounter at a price anyone in the trade can afford. I have acquired plenty of other tools as my role has changed (see photo) but the 179 is still the one I keep at hand for everyday jobs. There are other tools on the market that have the same functions at a lower price but with them you don't get the most important features: Fluke's safety, reliability, durability and accuracy. I trust no other brand on the job.
I bought my 179 in 2004. I have used it everyday as an automobile technician. I lover the back lighting, and that it has the capability to keep the back lighting on. Also love the very accurate ohms setting. Also use the DC amp option checking parasitic draws. And the meter is very accurate and works very well for fixing electronics at night. And for trouble shooting residential wiring as well. I would buy another in a heartbeat.
I absolutely love the features of the 179, it has great feel with modern ergonomic design. I also use the i410 current clamp with it for higher amperage readings, I use it on everything from High voltage AC to Automotive electrical, and often at the electronics level. It has several essential measurement capabilities, and does each very accurately.
I've had my 179 for about a month now and I will say that compared to the fieldpiece I had, this is the Cadillac of meters. So easy to use and read. I won't go with any other meter from here on out.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased a new tool so it would be current on calibration and it did not even come with a calibration sheet.
