Focus Features - Lost in Translation [BLU-RAY]

I went into this film years ago and found it a fairly accurate depiction of Japan and the bustling city of Tokyo itself. At the time, I couldn't really relate to the characters and the age difference between Murray and Johannson. Now older and having seen the film multiple times, I absolutely love this film, mainly because I can relate to it at this point in my life. It examines a celebrity man's existential/mid-life crisis and his somewhat mentoring relationship to his new found, highly educated, emotionally, neglected gal-pal, their interactions, hijinks, and time spent together around Tokyo. Their overall views on life at their respective ages and where they find themselves in their complex lives add into the mix. Yes, there are some silly scenes involving Murray and somewhat slower scenes of introspection with Johannson self-discovering the culture of Japan. On first view, I didn't know what to really think of the film. Ever since and through my own maturity and life experiences, I can finally say, "I get it." The soundtrack is fantastic and somewhat haunting and the ending, I found, was spectacularly done. Sure, the ending is going to be frustrating to a lot of folks, but as they say, some secrets needed to remain just that. As far as the R rating this film received, to me, it is ridiculous. Coppola could have easily left out the scene in question and easily scored a PG-13 rating for the film. She or perhaps Universal were insisting on getting the film stamped with the R rating. Silly, really, The aforementioned scene added absolutely NOTHING to the film. It's frustrating to me and just plain dumb. Overall - young adults are probably NOT going to enjoy/appreciate the film. With age comes wisdom and there lies the secret and beauty within this Academy Award winning screenplay, and it's resulting well-cast film.
