Sturdy and well-made little shovel. We purchased it for vacation usage but will keep it in our vehicle for future needs. Conveniently stores in its own carrying case.
As advertised.
This is perfect for camping trips or hiking it fits in a bag very nicely and compacts down small
I was in the military and used the entrenching tool issued to us. I have several of those but I was looking for something a little more packable. This is that tool. This shovel is small. This actually fits in places an army e-tool won't. I bought one several years ago and have used the crap out of it. Drove in tent stakes, dug holes, and done everything I would have done with the e-tool and it has never let me down.
I purchased my Gorge shovel several years ago. I've used it hard over that time, digging, scraping and some prying, it has never failed me! I backpack/prospect in the way outback of California and I have learned I can depend on my Gorge shovel. It has a small shovel head and I bought it because it was a small shovel/hacker/beater/digger for whatever size hole I wanted to dig. It is still going strong and will go out with me in 2013. Oh, and the hammer does work and it is a lot better than using a rock with the possibility the rock will hurt my hand.
Sounds like Gerber has a quality problem. I've had mine 10 years or so. Have beat it very hard through the years. Using for things it probably hasn't been intended for. Still going strong. My buddy has (had) one, threaded lock stripped out with minimal use. Maybe some were built in 3rd world country?!?
It's perfect aside from the fact that it doesn't lock completely. Expect some sway in the spade.
While I know that it is supposed to be a shovel that a person may pack, I was surprised by its small. The handle release that allows one to extend the handle is so stiff, I have not found anyone who is able to push it in to extend the handle. It works out to be a slightly over sized garden spade. I imagine that it is going to be difficult to do any real work with it.
Cheap metal connecting shovel to handle, broke evenly first use in snow. Handle is slick and should only be used on dry days. It's packable however
Product failed on first use while digging in soft dirt. Unacceptable. In addition, the edge of the spade is thick and dull, there's an opportunity to enhance the effectiveness of this tool with a grinder, but I did not have a chance before the product fa
