I've never used this brand/type of seasoning blend before so the first thing I did was try a pinch to understand the flavor profile - the mix came across heavy in the chili powder and paprika which is too be expected however there is very little salt or pizazz from other options, so all-in-all, a predictable base but little to the imagination. The low salt approach I really like since I prefer to control that when I cook - not from a health standpoint but for a final outcome in taste reason. The lack of pizazz bothered me. This is a big name brand with a big brand price tag and they couldn't come up with something here? No punch, no garlicky forwardness, no spiciness and maybe I was expecting too much from the flagship item in a seasoning series with more options available that I'm just not aware of. There is plenty of dehydrated minced onion pieces but I recommend that be dropped for something else if they're trying to deliver while watching costs and lets face it, if you're making chili at home, you're already adding fresh onion so having it in the seasoning is a waste. Regardless, I had recently made chili dogs for our family recently so another round of chili was out plus this was too plain and would require some extra attention to make a pot of chili pop. Therefore, I came up with a unique option to use it as a base for grilled blackened chicken. This worked well other than the onion that readily fell away from the meat while coating. It held in the juices well when cooked and provided a decent flavor albeit I have to admit that I added some pizazz in the form of brown sugar to aid in searing and sealing in the natural juices as well as a little cayenne and ancho to provide a little pop. Summary: a good base blend or option if you're not too familiar with your spice rack but not worth the price tag. Aldi branded chili seasoning is better than this option for half the price.
