Parsnips are naturally sweet and peppery. My mother-in l-aw introduced them to me years ago. Rinse them, cook whole. or chop them up in chunks. Roast them with a little pepper, a little sugar, and a little butter. They are delightful. Carrots get all the press. :-)
I love Parsnip. It makes some of the tastiest dishes. Parsnip looks kind of like a carrots only they are white. They are just like carrots only a little sweeter. You can easily use them instead of carrots. I make patties. Scrap the skin, or peel very lightly (they don't really have a peel). Cook them in only enough water to barely cover them, leave whole. They are done when a knife slides easily through them. To make the patties, mash them just to get smooth, don't overwork. Add an egg, 2-3 Tbsp flour, salt, pepper, form into patties, kind like hamburger,. Fry up in frying pan. Enjoy!
THRILLED to find these at Walmart. They're a staple for my Nanny's Chicken soup, and I've been unable to find Parsnips anywhere near my location (a year and a half). I do prefer unpackaged, but in complete honesty, I've purchased them a few times now, we're in dead of winter, sub-temps, snow, ice, stuck in the house, it's chicken soup weather (though I eat plant based chicken) and these are SO GOOD! They aren't SO GOOD because I can't find them anywhere else, I don't shop or eat that way, if it's not good, really good, what I need or what something calls for, I don't buy eat, don't eat it, don't cook it. These are really fresh, perfect color, texture and taste, and I'm talking about near 60 years of Parsnip experience (RIP Nanny). I've been making her soup for over 30 years, she's been gone quite a while now, and each time I do, I can smell her kitchen and every ingredient. These Parsnips are FRESH, perfect flavor, sweet and oh so good. For anyone that's familiar with Parsnips these are the real deal. I highly recommend them. Thank you Walmart!
PARSNIPS ARE AN OLD TIME FAVORITE W/A LIGHT CARROT HINT FOR TASTE. SLICE THEM THIN PUT IN WATER 1st to BOIL AS THEY TAKE A LONG TIME 2 COOK. PARSNIPS LEND A SWEETER TASTE TO SOUPS OR CAN BE COOKED WITH ROASTS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ROASTING PAN. U DON'T HAVE TO PEEL THEM, JUST CUT OFF THE BAD ENDS, THE TIP %26 BUTT ENDS. THE SAME AS WHAT U WOULD DO W/A CARROT B4 COOKING IT. CARROTS DON'T HAVE TOO BE PEELED EITHER !
Keeps for a long time in the refrigerator. This is a nice alternative to carrots to add some variety. I usually mix them with carrots. Parsnips are higher than carrots in certain vitamins, fiber and potassium (heart healthy). Parsnips are higher in carbs and calories though. Keep in mind the fiber mitigates the higher carb and calories to some extent
I used this in my homemade soup. Very fresh. Easy to peel with a peeler. Gave the chicken soup a great taste. The parsnip lent a very mild, sweet taste. Would highly recommend.
It is hard to find parsnips evenin the fall although Parsnips can be harvested into winter. As a proud American of much Irish ancestry, I use Parsnips whenever a recipe calls for carrots which are orange. Anyhow these were fresh and not soft at all. They have a distinctive flavor having a fresh, crisp taste instead of a cloying sweet one.
I imagine these shoppers don't actually consider if they're buying for themselvea or some they care about. It ALWAYS seems they just pick up the very 1st thing they see, instead of trying to be more selective. Because anything fresh (particularly produce) appears to be the dredge of the barrel!!
Had never had parsnips before so got them as a trial! Heard they were good in homemade vegetable soup ! Well . . . Maybe to some - and they weren't awful! I just didn't know what they tasted like — I didn't like! Won't get again!
This item was horrible. Every one of the parsnips was rotting and moldy. Completely inexible. Becoming disappointed in this store. Many of the items delivered are sub par, partially thawed (more than the delivery time would allow) and some out of date, or on verge of being inedible.
