This being strawberry season I have been trying three kinds of cakes for the sugared berries - pound cake, shortcake tart cups and angel food. By the ounce they are all about the same. Walmart used to sell angel food ring cakes in big shells - I liked the cakes because they had the authentic texture but I hated the wasteful plastic shells I had to haul to the recycling center. The first ingredient of the angel food is egg whites! So you get more protein and less unhealthy bleached flour. The cake cuts easy and keeps OK at room temp or in the fridge. It is a bit more mushy and soft than the traditional angel cakes but I'm not sure that is a problem at all when drowned in berries, ice cream and milk or whipped cream. It gets less mushy than the vanilla tart cups when you make the dessert. I am delighted to discover that Walmart's coconut sugar is great for sugaring berries and it has a lower glycemic index than sugar. Try it. It is the color of dark brown sugar but it has a certain something that is addictive and more tasty.
Bought this for the first time on my last order. Needed something for the rhubarb I cooked up for rhubarb short cake. I usually make shortcakes out of bisquick, but didn't want to heat up the oven, because of it was very hot that day. Guees what ? the angel food bar worked great!! So now I have another option when wanting shortcakes.
Waited all day for the product I didn't come with my early delivery I had to fight tooth and nail and go through two chats which lasted over an hour to get my refund then when I finally get it it's small and very dry not much flavor I was looking forward to it so bad very disappointed it cost $4.63 with tax and it had a discount or two something not worth it I tried to load three pictures and wouldn't let me do it very small maybe 2 inches thick very compact not like a real angel food cake
Well I am used to buying the angel food cake that is round but I decided to give this a try because of what I was making. For me personally while the taste is a tad better than the round, the texture is a tad more dense. I had to put it in the microwave to soften it. But like I said it is a better taste than other angel food cakes and it absorbs fruit juice without getting super soggy.
I've never had angel food cake this cloyingly sweet or this dense. It's sweet enough that it'll make you queasy, and I can't imagine adding anything to it that might up that level of ick. I've legitimately had pound cakes airier than this, too. Shockingly (not really), my husband loves it, so I grab him one every time he asks. No one else will touch it.
The presentation in the wrapper looks fresh, I looked for an exp. date to not find one on the wrapper %26 the cardboard underneath the cake.I chose the deli angel food cake over the frozen name brand pound cake this time because I thought it would taste fresh %26 light with the fresh strawberries. Instead, I had to cut this angel food cake with a serrated knife because it was rubbery. Once cut, I tasted without the fruit and the consistency was of rubber in your mouth %26 it was not airy and light tasting.Even with fruit (syrup), I was disappointed. I'll stick with the pound cake found in the frozen section from now on.
This bar is very dry. If you plan to serve it, make sure you pair it with something that can soak into it. I love angel food cake and whipped topping, not with this. It doesn't have the same consistency as Angel Food Cake, it's just dry all the way through.
The only way I would recommend this product is if you go into the store and buy it yourself because I purchased it online with other grocery items to be delivered to my home only for the driver to say he delivered it with the rest of my things when he didn't! I don't know if he wanted it for himself, or if he just scanned it and forgot to put it in his cart that they use, but nonetheless he lied about delivering it to my home! I had to ask for a refund when I really needed the angel food cake for making Strawberry Short Cake today for dessert! Now I have all of these Strawberries and cool whip that I've got to figure out a desert???
Delivered 09/12/25. The cake was over 7 days old. I didn't open. It was kind of caved on top and dense. It had two best by date stickers, one on top of the other. I carefully peeled the top one ( best by 09/19/25), the sticker underneath read best by 09/12/25. I took photos.
Smells and tastes like bubble gum. It's like someone dumped a whole bottle of bubble gum flavored amoxicillian in the mix. My kids wouldn't even eat it. They said "it tastes like medicine". Very disappointing, luckily I bought the smaller cake and not the large one.
