The hybrid FUSION - is a savior.
The St. Louis Blues March, originally made famous by the late Glenn Miller, requires both short rolls and rudiments on the snare drum, as well as good ping definition on the ride cymbals. If you were to employ a nice thick stick for the rolls, it would probably sound too harsh on the ride. Your typical jazz style stick, such as a 7A, will certainly provide wonderful ping definition on even the largest of ride cymbals, but does not carry enough mass up front at the shoulder to be able to deliver nice short rolls. The hybrid FUSION - is a savior. It provides enough mass at the shoulder to execute short rolls with ease, while still providing a small enough bead or tip to bring out the ping definition in even the thickest and largest diameter of ride cymbals.
