Great option for oiling out

COURTNEY January 28, 2026

I've never tried oiling out a painting before and was recommended this product. It worked great and was easy to use. Gamblin products are always a good choice in my opinion.

Great Quality

IndigoK September 6, 2020

This is very good quality artist's grade safflower oil. I have just started using Walnut oil based paints and had purchased this product with the intention of using it to clean brushes. I've since learned that you don't need to use artist's quality oil like this for brush cleaning (any grocery store oil is fine for that) so I'm saving what's left to use as a medium.

Great intro to a variety of mediums!

Angjh June 2, 2021

This was the perfect set for me to try some new mediums. The size is just right to get to thoroughly try them out and the insert was super helpful for a quick description of what they all do. Also, cheaper here than other places I saw them for sale.

My "Go To" medium when plein air painting!

VERA June 30, 2024

This medium is my go to when I plein air paint during the festivals. It allows me to use it not only as a lovely medium that creates a gentle gloss, but it allows the paint to dry within a day without any worry of cracking or separating as other mediums sometimes do. I also use it as a glaze when I want that soft translucent effect in my use of reflections in the water detail.

Lovely product for varnishing watercolors!

G March 8, 2020

I bought this to try out varnishing my watercolors with it for a "no glass" framing option. It worked beautifully just as YouTube said it would. I used 2 thin layers on each piece, and buffed out imperfections after 24 hours of curing. With our Austin humidity, it stayed tacky for 48 hours or so, but is nice and wipe-able after that.

Great alternative for the 'solvent-free' oil painter.

Erick C. March 13, 2021

If you're serious about oil painting but don't want to deal with all of the downsides when it comes to using solvents during and after a painting session for cleanup, then look no further than the use of Gamblin safflower oil. Any oil is good to thin out paint / clean brushes with including walnut, poppy, linseed, but I feel the safflower oil by Gamblin is the best offering. You don't have to worry about yellowing over time either. But this oil thins my oils down nicely and does an exceptional job of cleaning my brushes for later use during a painting session. On a side note, for final cleanup I dip my brushes in a jar of this oil then finish up by using the Master's brush soap or lavender & olive oil soap by Chelsea along with a jar water and wiping off with paper towels. I will admit that this oil is a little bit on the pricey side, but you can recycle the dirty, usable oil using a 'two jar system' with 'clean' and 'dirty' oil. if you're trying to stick to painting solvent free with oils and don't want flammable or harmful toxins in your work area, this is the best solution and I highly recommend it!

Great features

Shirley1952 December 20, 2016

I bought this on the recommendation of an artist I took a workshop from. It was to help us learn to paint glass and work with reflection of color on surrounding surfaces. It's hard to get used to at first but I plan on practicing with it a lot. I recently had a commission for Christmas and needed it to dry faster and it worked.

Great product!

Mila May 20, 2021

I used to use gesso to prime my panels for oil painting panels but it made my panels more absorbent. Recently I switched to oil ground and the difference is quite obvious! The oil ground makes panels less absorbent and so I am able to manipulate the paint better! This product is awesome!

Very good

Barbara May 8, 2021

I have been using this medium for years. It is great. That said, lately I have noticed that it tends to congeal more quickly. I am a full time painter and I use a lot of medium. Once the product begins to thicken up it is useless. To remedy this I make a very tiny cut in the foil liner. This helps to keep the medium flowing freely.
