Similar to most of the hand held Garmin products, this provides many different aspects of back country and wilderness mapping and tracking. Major factors for me were: ease of use and wireless data transfer (Bluetooth). The menus are pretty well laid out with most features needed for specific activities are grouped together. The screen is large enough for a good set of data and most data screens can be tailored for specific user data. I do have one issue: I use this for search and rescue activity and having to put in data (capturing data for a mark on the map) while moving is a little challenging as one must click navigate through a virtual keyboard on the screen for each letter. The "wrap around" feature of this is very nice though. Once you get use to the sensitivity and speed of response to navigate the "keyboard" it goes a little faster. The Garmin does like to consume batteries - the manual does state the run time of a new set of batteries and it seems pretty accurate - I use alkaline batteries but still get the same run time. Still a good buy for the price and abilities of the product. PLEASE NOTE: the first photo shows the Garmin with a quick release wrist strap - this is how I use it in the field; however, the wrist strap DOES NOT COME WITH THE PRODUCT. The Garmin comes with a detachable clip as show in the second photo. The third photo show the Garmin with out the clip.
The GPSMAP 65S is a user-friendly device for anyone looking to “get lost” outdoors. It has provided me with valuable information about public lands during hiking and scouting for hunting seasons. The satellite capabilities have yet to be fully tested, but are stellar in the applications that I have used to this point. I would recommend this device 10/10 times for anyone looking for something other than their cell phone for outdoor exploring, hunting, and personal GIS applications.
This is the third Garmin GPSMap hand held. They just get better and better. The 2 previous lasted 10 years each before they wore out.
Helps me find my way home after a hard day at work.
Easy to use
The Garmin 65s GPS receiver is compact and fits comfortably in men's standard front pockets. However, it consumes alkaline batteries rapidly while navigating. It supports expandable memory through a microSD card slot, allowing for up to 32GB of additional maps and data. The receiver is multi-band capable and can receive most international satellite transmissions, making it useful in densely forested areas and canyons worldwide. Accuracy varies between 2.0 and 10 meters, depending on the terrain and satellite reception.
I purchased this device recently as a replacement for an Oregon 650. My use has been frequent. The accuracy of the Tracks is very good and the system for management and storage of Track data with BaseCamp is very good. The use of buttons and keypad on the device is tedious and cumbersome in comparison to the Oregon 650 touch screen. For my purposes it does what I require but the overall software and user interface is out of date and in need of an overhaul.
Never received the item I ordered from Walmart. Would never recommend buying from Walmart.com. They told me they would refund the money but never did. They did nothing to make it right.
The screen is so small you can't tell where you are overall, and if you zoom out it looses all the detail so you can't tell what trail you are on. Obsolete, confusing, and Walmart expects me to drive twenty miles from my home just to return it, something they conveniently forgot to mention. I would never buy this GPS again, and would never order anything from Walmart again either.
This is my 3rd Garmin handheld GPS I have GPSmap60Cx and GPSMAPS64st.The map on the GPS 60 the where add to the chip and 64 came with the unit. The 65's map are the worst they lack detail streams are missing even named ones. This not good for search and rescue work. There are maps to South and central America a place I will never go. There some much add that when a tried to do an update I was told there was no room. That I would need to add a memory card. This is the first time the i am not happy with a Garmin Product.
