I have used a MK2i for a few years. It has been great, but far more than I needed. I am a PADI Master Instructor, diving around 500-600 times most years. Not a multi sports guy, and not a tech diver. The G1 does all that I need (and more) without being quite so overwhelming. Since I use a separate hose mounted air integrated computer or a hose mounted SPG as well, the air integration has not been missed. And at an attractive price.
I bought this a few weeks ago and love every feature. Battery life is excellent, so much that I don't have to take a charger when I travel. I've already played around with the dive computer, and I'm looking forward to taking it out as soon as possible
I've had the Garmin G1 for a little over a year. I've put nearly 100 dives on it along with countless other activities including running, ATV, riding, horseback, riding, fishing, and boating. I could be happier with this watch. I love the MIP display and the battery life is outstanding. If you're an avid recreational diver, who also likes to stay busy outdoors, I couldn't recommend a better companion device.
My wife bought another “entry level” dive watch. Already being a Garmin user (955), I bought the Descent G1. The Descent G1 is a million times better and easier to use than my wives. So much so I'm going to upgrade to the Fenix 8 and let her use the Descent G1 and we will use her garbage watch as a backup.
I love this watch and I love garmin's support. I have used the G1 as my sons dive computer but after it hat sat a while the battery life became significantly less than expected. After contacting garmin, they ended up replacing it with a refurbished warch even though it was out of warranty. That is amazing service and standing behind your product. Hooray for garmin making great products and having great support.
I highly recommend getting this watch if you enjoy diving, whether your new or experienced this product is amazing even out of the water!
PROS: This is a great dive watch, particularly for people who like analytics and a fitness/activity watch included. As far as diving capability, I really enjoy the wide selection of dive faces and the compass, which couldn't be easier to use. The screen's backlighting is plenty bright for diving in any conditions and I love that the dive log uploads automatically to my phone. Diving 2+ times a day, the battery will last about 20 days and takes max 30 minutes to charge fully. The buttons have never frozen or gotten and it has never died on me unlike many of my previous computers. CONS: This isn't the best option for simplicity. It's built to be capable of a lot so it takes a minute to get used to all the buttons and screens, especially if you are used to an entry-level computer. You can delete most of the activity features but there will still be a lot going on. The dive watch faces are really capable but also kind of busy and annoying in my opinion. For my purposes teaching rec diving, I prefer to just have dive time, deco time, and depth but the most simple face I can find includes air type and temp as well. It's a really small gripe but it kind of clogs up the watch face which is already on the smaller side. Overall, it's a great dive computer and I'm really happy with it.
I am pleased with the watch so far but haven't been diving yet. However the online owners manual is Terrible. I had to call a tech to figure out how to use and she as Fantastic. Lisa took me through every set up and use of the watch but it took almost an hour of her time. Even the u tube videos were worthless.
Excellent product. My only complaint is that Garmin's user manuals that come with their devices are uniformly terrible and pretty much useless. It surprises me that a big company with the resources that it owns publishes such garbage and distributes it to its customers.
I bought the Descent G1 last month and have done 12 dives in Roatan. Overall, I really l like the product for diving. Easy to use, easy to read and not cumbersome. I also liked the Blue tooth connectivity for non Scuba activities. There is some difficulty getting to the steps/running tracking......
