Garmin Edge 1040 GPS Cycling C

The product was exactly what I was looking for and was available at a price that was equal to or better than other sites.

The Edge has everything you could ask for in a cycling computer. The map integration is seamless, the battery life is outstanding, and it comes packed with far more features than I expected. From navigation to performance tracking, it handles it all effortlessly. If you want a reliable, feature-rich companion for every ride, the Edge 1040 is absolutely worth it.

Love this bike computer. It was easy to set up, it is easy to read, and since we have a lot of sunshine where we live, I seldom need to charge it. I was recently on a 5-day backcountry mountain bike trip, and the computer stayed well-charged without me having to plug it in. Highly recommend this computer.

I picked this up after using an 840 for the last couple of years. I was looking for longer battery life and a bigger screen, and it hits both marks. The size is great for using the map screen with the MapDashboardMS widget to get all of your important details on one screen. I can read all fields easily now, whereas things were pretty tiny on the 840. I recently took this on a three-day bikepacking trip, and battery life is great, with a small boost from the solar. No need to charge during those three days - I had about 1/3 of a battery left at the end. Now that it's Fall heading into winter, the angle of the sun isn't as good for picking up power on the panel, but I've been surprised by the boost in runtime I get. For the negatives: it's still a Garmin, so the interface is complicated and sometimes tedious (try pausing radar tones for a busy highway section). There are still software bugs, the same I encountered on my 840, mostly around occasional issues pairing sensors on wakeup, and one freeze after wake that needed a hard reset to get it running again. None of these are issues during a ride though. I would like to see the maps work a little faster - turning up the detail on a map slows things down, but I don't notice it while I'm navigating a route. I consider map rendering speed a tradeoff for battery life. I've put the computer through its paces now on gravel, MTB, bikepack and road rides, and I'm quite happy with it. While the newer processor on the *50 series would be nice, I value the battery life more for the riding I do. Oh, also I do not miss the extra side buttons on the 840 - those were always too small for me to use reliably anyway.

I bought this to replace my Garmin 540, only because I needed a bigger screen. So far I love it! Big display is easy to read and it easy to set up and use. Has all the features of the 540 plus many more that I never thought I'd use. It tracks every hill climb, also warns you that the climb is coming up. Warns you that paved road is turning to gravel/dirt. I use it for an indoor trainer, outdoor on my Tri-bike and on a gravel bike. Works great on every application.

The main reason I upgraded from an 820 to 1040 was the battery. 820 did everything I needed to do but the battery was horrible. Six hour ride and I was almost done.! Love the 1040 !!! didn't think the biggest screen would make a difference but sure as heck does !

Mostly good points, but several not good. Not good: - screen. Hard to easily discern in strong sunlight. Needs a screen like my Garmin 970. - sluggish startup. Probably due to the old processor and the xx4 programming language. - solar. The panels need to charge the battery, like my ancient Cateye Solar, not just extend use. - menus. Somewhat cumbersome. I understand this is an “older” computer, but the menus need to be reworked. Good: - battery life. Used it on a 1200k ride and virtually lasted the entire trip. If solar CHARGED the battery, it would be a game changer. - size. Easy to see. Looking forward to the Garmin 1060 in hope the negatives are resolved.

Purchased a 1040 after my 1030 plus didn't survive a torrential rain storm. It has a nicer user interface than the 1030 but the software is buggy even the most recent beta version. Grade worked well on the 1030 despite some lag but doesn't work at all on the 1040. As many others have stated even on flat ground it can go from -3% to +3 % in just 50 yards or less. Climbpro doesn't reflect the proper beginning or ending of many climbs even on popular trails. Temperature is still not accurate but I always viewed it more as a heat index. If Garmin could get to a stable working firmware it would be a great bike computer.

The Edge 1040 has great battery life. I am well versed in using it and moving it from bike to bike. It has two flaws. First, it does not connect to an Apple Watch - I use the garmin chest strap for HR and it works great but is uncomfortable. Second, The Edge recalculates route information it receives from Garmin Connect. This results in dramatically conflicting data all within the Garmin ecosystem system. There is not one truth! I was uploading a route on Alpe D'Huez and Connect said a 3800 foot climb and the Edge recalculated it to 8,000 foot climb. It did this multiple times, I did a factory reset and it still was wrong. (The correct height is 3800 feet.) When this fails I will likely look away from Garmin

My Wahoo Element died 5 days before a 40 day bikepacking trip. I find it hard to express just what a waste of money this computer is: won't load routes consistently from Ride w GPS, is not intuitive AT ALL, won't rename routes, acter every ride tells me how much solar power helped… Seriously. The Climb feature is ridiculous. Standard setting was calling out pimples. Had to go into settings and change. God help me, this is probably the biggest waste of money in my life.Okay, maybe seccond biggest. And for what it's worth, I run withwma Forerunner 55 and recommend to everyone looking for a running watch
