The product was exactly what I was looking for and was available at a price that was equal to or better than other sites.
I've been using another popular brand for years now and switched before a big bikepacking trip and have no regrets. The capabilities and accuracy of the 1040 solar are great. The solar feature really helped out during a 36 hour race in the mountains with a good deal of shade. Setting up the various templates takes a little work but it's not that bad and it's worth it. I am a huge fan and I'm happy I converted
After using the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar for long endurance rides and (SFR 600k) brevets, I can honestly say the battery life and navigation are game changers. The solar charging, multi-band GPS accuracy, and training features make it one of the best cycling computers I've used for ultra-distance riding. It's especially reassuring not having to constantly worry about battery life during long days and overnight events.
I have had the product for about 3 weeks and have gone on about 12 rides so far. Very impressed with the battery life, screen display, and the features. I upgraded from an Edge 1000 so there are many new features with the Edge 1040. I really enjoy the Climb Pro feature so you can figure out how much effort to put in and how much longer you need to suffer. I cannot wait to try the WO mode on the trainer during the Winter months that I won't be outside.
After 3 years of purchase battery seems to drain faster and recharge time takes a long time considering other Garmin products do not. Recently, the audio alerts for heart rate, speed/pace and navigation turn audio prompts do not work. Support has escalated the issue with a diagnostic log to no avail. Support in the past has been good, but this one is lagging. I sometimes question updates that seem to break something and fixed with a future update. Otherwise, the Edge 1040 works well.
I have been using the solar edge in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Ive found that even when off, Im unable to gain much charge on the device through the solar. It's not worth the investment from that standpoint. In addition when I am climbing tough mountain bike terrain, the garmin “pauses” tracking and I have to take my hand off the handlebar to press the play button twice to get it to resume. Sometimes I must do this 5 times in a row to get it to quit. Lastly, I use this device for navigation, but when I am approaching a climb (and unfortunately usually a fork in the trail) the screen switches to show me Im about to climb. I dont find that as helpful as navigation and it usually means I need to stop at the bottom of a climb loaing all momentum to manually switch back to the navigation screen. This device could be right for some folks, but Im not a big fan for the 1k price tag.
The Garmin Edge 1040 is very easy to install on the bike. However it is not so easy to use. It is probably extraordinarily good for those who want to have a training regime, but if you're looking for something that will help you just find the trail that you're on and measure your distance your altitude gain and the simple biking things that you might want this may not be the instrument that best fit fits your needs. I bought it because it fit with the radar/tail light that I have and I know that it will do everything I want but it just isn't easy to get there.
The Edge 1040 has great battery life. I am well versed in using it and moving it from bike to bike. It has two flaws. First, it does not connect to an Apple Watch - I use the garmin chest strap for HR and it works great but is uncomfortable. Second, The Edge recalculates route information it receives from Garmin Connect. This results in dramatically conflicting data all within the Garmin ecosystem system. There is not one truth! I was uploading a route on Alpe D'Huez and Connect said a 3800 foot climb and the Edge recalculated it to 8,000 foot climb. It did this multiple times, I did a factory reset and it still was wrong. (The correct height is 3800 feet.) When this fails I will likely look away from Garmin
The tocuh screen is not reliable. Sometimes it works, other times it does not. The other scary problem is taht pretty frequently, the 1040 does not power up. This also happens when you need to shut it down. The boot up process is unreliable & inconsistent. I am up to date with all software updtes. The device is so buggy. By far my worst Garmin device I have ever had. And I have had plenty of Garmin devices.
My Wahoo Element died 5 days before a 40 day bikepacking trip. I find it hard to express just what a waste of money this computer is: won't load routes consistently from Ride w GPS, is not intuitive AT ALL, won't rename routes, acter every ride tells me how much solar power helped… Seriously. The Climb feature is ridiculous. Standard setting was calling out pimples. Had to go into settings and change. God help me, this is probably the biggest waste of money in my life.Okay, maybe seccond biggest. And for what it's worth, I run withwma Forerunner 55 and recommend to everyone looking for a running watch
