The Genesis Abstract is hands down the best full suspension 29er bike Kent makes. The Shimano EZ-Fire Trigger Shifters work great, the rear derailleur once dialed in works great. The rear suspension is way better than the pogo sticks on the V2100 and Incline. For the extra $5 compared to the V2100 and Incline, you get better shifters, a better suspension and rear disk brake mounting spots on the swingarm, it's a bargain. Maybe they will use those mounting spots and add rear disk brakes in the future, but I toed in the rear V-brakes and not a sound and they stop good. I upgraded the handlebars and stem cause these are skinny and narrow 25.4mm X 630mm, so I put 31.8mm X 720mm bars and a nice 4 bolt stem and some nice alloy pedals. What a difference $40 worth of eBay upgrades make.
Bike arrived yesterday. It was well packed, however after assembling the bike I removed the protective wrapping from the frame and found the lettering GENESIS on the down tube was damaged but the wrapping over it was unmarked meaning that it was damaged in the factory. No way I can return the bike now. Not Walmarts fault
Although I like the bike, the listing details are misleading, and just wrong. In the listing, it is indicated that this bike has click-type shifters; however, the actual product has twist-type shifters, which I really detest. I will be modifying the bike using parts from my old bike, which of course will void the warranty but that's the way the cookie crumbles, I guess. Other than that, I really don't have another complaints on this bike right now. I took it out for a test ride; the shifters, and brakes all seem to work as they should, although the shifting to me is wonky since I am used to click-type shifters (my old bike has them which is why I am modifying this one). I also don't like the handlebars as they are "girlie", and shorter than the handlebars on my old bike, so I'll be switching that out. So in all, I am deducting a star for the misleading details in the listing.
The pictures on this site show the click-type shifter that can also be found on other Genesis bikes in-store, but it delivers with the twist-type gear shifter. Fortunately(?) the box had enough holes in it from shipping that I could tell what type of shifter it came with before even opening the box, hopefully making returning it easier.
Pedals clear the front tire by less than 1". Makes it somewhat dangerous to get started or turn when going slow. Other than that, I love the adjustable spring suspension, and the rest of the bike if fine. I just bought it to ride around town with the kids. The bike I borrowed before was way to rough with only front suspension. I wouldn't recommend buying for just the front tire clearance issue.
Received the shipment beaten pretty bad. Found no visible damage to the contents inside and so went ahead with assembly. Perhaps it's not QC'ed properly. The front wheel just couldn't be fixed in place. If it sits perfectly in the fork groves then the disk will not properly get in between the brake-pads and the wheel just doesn't rotate. If wheel is first placed in a such a ways that its disk can smoothly get in between break-pads then it doesn't align with fork grooves and if any little force is applied to fit it into the groves the wheel gets stuck. No choice but to return.
I ordered this bike and added assembly for an additional $99, but when the bike came in it was damaged and I had to send it back, I was still charged for the assembly. It should have been canceled as soon as I requested a return. I will never order assembly again.
First use, the grips that hold the handle bars in place have to be cranked down way harder than you might suppose, otherwise they just come loose and you have a whole loose bar. Not a huge issue, and fixed that by cranking those down hard. 3rd use, I was peddling up a hill, and the pedal sheared itself out of the crank. After crashing into a cornfield, I got up and tried to put the pedal back in, only to find that the threads have been completely sheared from the force of the pedal removing itself from the crank. I have tried to get a warranty replacement, and after asking for pictures and who put the bike together, they decided it was “cross-threaded” upon assembly. Yeah, no. Especially since I saw a review of the bike on their website from just 12 days ago with the exact same problem. I've been putting bikes together, and riding bikes for most of my life, and have never had this happen. I like the bike, but if things are falling apart and the company is not willing to help, that's a 1 star in my book. Steer clear.
I don't care if there are pro's for this bike.. If I'm unable to assemble the bike due to a faulty hex screw for the handlebars; whats the point? Unless this gets sorted out in the next day, I'll be returning this piece of poorly welded garbage. Buyer beware.
The front wheel rim was bent possibly due to the lack of protection during transit. It is easy to tell because after assembling it and rolling the wheel while upside down it wobbles from side to side. Notice the distance between the wheel and the fork in the 2 attached pictures. Customer service doesn't even answer the phone..I will return it to the store.
