It's a great guitar but requires a little setup to get tuning and intonation correct and you probably want to add a set of new strings. For the price, it's great value. Check for videos online to see for yourself.

This is a great guitar for any age

Obviously the best priced travel bass available. The neck is actually pretty great, especially for the price, it looks nice and feels nicer and I don't feel the need to crown the frets. No buzzing after truss adjustment either. The tuners are also suprisingly good, they are very responsive and hold tune pretty well. The body shape is comfortable. But, the finish is bad. Really bad. Very haphazard and already flaking in places. Truly a landlord quality job. Also, the pickups were put in with zero regard for sound. They are very unbalanced, and I can't even adjust them as the screws are not only completely stuck but also pre-stripped from the factory. Additionally, the controls are confusing. I have no idea what they do, I think it's tone - master volume - pickup blend? But if that's the case the volume only works sometimes, and it's settings are basically 10, 9, 8, and completely off. Never seen a pot act like that before. If you want your kid to really get into bass and they need something tiny, look into a Kala. They are more expensive but they are a lot more polished and will be worth it more long term. You want to keep your kid playing, and this instrument's controls could be potentially frustrating. If you want a cheap platform for a custom travel bass though, this one is a great option! I got this for myself, going into it knowing I wanted to modify the crap out of it. I hope the stuck pickup screws don't get in my way...
