GoPro Media Mod

It works great but it should have an RF Tage because I lost it.

The GoPro Media Mod is a classic case of an accessory that's brilliant in theory but frustrating in practice. When it works, it's an absolute game changer, transforming the GoPro into a versatile vlogging and production camera with excellent external audio and HDMI output. The built-in shotgun mic is a huge improvement over the camera's native audio, and having a 3. 5mm jack for my own mics is a necessity for my workflow. However, the major issue, and it feels like a 50/50 shot every time, is that it often simply does not work as expected. I'm not sure what the root cause is, but there's a recurring issue where the camera doesn't recognize the mod, especially when it's paired with the Volta grip. I've had two different Media Mods, and the problem has persisted with both. It often requires me to remove the camera, manually reset connections, and hope for the best. The potential of the Media Mod is immense, and it's a vital piece of the GoPro ecosystem for creators. But until the connection issues are resolved, it's hard to fully trust it for a professional shoot where reliability is non-negotiable. It's a fantastic concept that needs more consistent execution.

Un bon boîtier avec une amélioration de la qualité sonore. Un gros défaut malheureusement: la protection du micro ne tient pas très bien et elle n'a pas résisté à une sortie de nuit en vélo. Je l'ai perdue sans même m'en rendre compte. Et pas de possibilité pour l'instant d"avoir la protection en pièce détachée. Du coup je suis assez mécontent...Mérite ses 5 étoiles avec une protection mieux fixée.

I wanted a way to reduce wind noise. You can't run external mic with dead cat unless you buy the media mod. That's disappointing for the consumer and greedy by the company. This mod is also cumbersome to use as you have to completely unmount the camera to change the battery. The case is so wide that the normal mounting screw you use is very difficult to turn. I've had the camera move several times because you can't turn the screw with you fingers. Now you have to pack a needle nose pliers too. Poorly designed mod.

GoPro made the solution for the problem they created. "You want better audio? Here's a dongle. Let me get that for you. In the meantime, we also have this one other thing that doesn't dangle and fits exactly right into your GoPro Hero 9, 10 or 11. Also, it costs just a bit more but you do get 2 cold shoe ports, hdmi port, 3.5mm audio jack and the USB-C port that you lost because they connect through that." With that in mind, it works. Audio is better than stock, mushy buttons because not only are you going through one button but two just to get it to actuate. The feet feel shorter as the case uses the stock feet so you cannot do a quick battery swap anymore.

Nice concept but I originally bought this for the ability of the HDMI output to my TV. Unfortunately i could never get any of my slo-mo to show properly and the GoPro screen goes black once it is connected to an external device. So sent it back. Didn't really review it past that.

Received and tested. gopro hero12 black doesnt recognize it is connected. 1. Tested the gopro type-c by plugging directly into pc, no media mod: successful connection. 2. Tested the TRS connection mic that I am utilizing with pc: successfully working. 3. Tested gopro with media mod + TRS connection mic: does not work. 4. Tested gopro with media mod into PC via type-c connection: does not recognize (although it will begin to charge it) I have the latest updated firmware. Willing to update review once replacement is sent if maybe this is just a rare defective one.

Have you tried detaching the GoPro from the mod EVERY time you have to access the battery or sd card. I have to use a big screwdriver every time. The mod needs its own fixed legs to mount everywhere. Not the trapped little GoPro legs poking out from under the mod. It's a no brainer!!! Please upgrade mine. It's unnecessarily cumbersome to use, fix errors with charging and download data.

The fact that we spend a bunch of money on a action camera with bad battery life, just to be forced to spend more to have a 3.5mm jack is sad, no reason GoPro could t have made this cheaper, come with the starter kit, or been built into the camera in the first place.

Terrible mod. What's the point in having a wind sock for the mic if all it does is let all the wind noise through?! With GoPro mounted on chin part of motorcycle helmet, therefore behind motorcycle screen, with wind noise reduction switched on and rear mic selected. It records as much wind noise as it does without the media mod even attached. Makes no sense. Waste of money
