This mod is mostly great. It does however have two big issues it would be cool to see addressed if this is ever upgraded. 1. A switch to be able to shift from front mic to back mic would make it easier to go from talking to the camera to panning to show surroundings. 2. It badly needs its own mounting lugs so you can change batteries quicker without having to unscrew it from the mount. The mic works well and I love the ability to plug in an external mic.
The GoPro Media Mod is a classic case of an accessory that's brilliant in theory but frustrating in practice. When it works, it's an absolute game changer, transforming the GoPro into a versatile vlogging and production camera with excellent external audio and HDMI output. The built-in shotgun mic is a huge improvement over the camera's native audio, and having a 3. 5mm jack for my own mics is a necessity for my workflow. However, the major issue, and it feels like a 50/50 shot every time, is that it often simply does not work as expected. I'm not sure what the root cause is, but there's a recurring issue where the camera doesn't recognize the mod, especially when it's paired with the Volta grip. I've had two different Media Mods, and the problem has persisted with both. It often requires me to remove the camera, manually reset connections, and hope for the best. The potential of the Media Mod is immense, and it's a vital piece of the GoPro ecosystem for creators. But until the connection issues are resolved, it's hard to fully trust it for a professional shoot where reliability is non-negotiable. It's a fantastic concept that needs more consistent execution.
Only got the media mod because i needed to attach a mic since the mic in the camera itself is garbage. The media mod makes the camera difficult to change batteries or memory cards. For the price you have to pay, you would think this wouldn't be an issue. Hopefully future models will fix these issues especially since the battery needs changed every hour or two depending on the settings used. It works for what it is, but it's far from perfect.
media mod does its job for my intended purpose of mounting a DJI mic, but mounting this on a cam is annoying! 1) it fits very tightly on top of the camera 2) you have to disconnect all to change the batteries 3) you have to disconnect everything to remove the memory cards from the camera.. 4) you have to disconnect the installed additional devices on media mod, because the cover cannot be opened on the camera to change the battery
INCONVENIENCE: - Considering the poor battery life, it's not practical for use outside, when batteries need to be replaced often. - Requires removal of shorty stick (or any other attachment) to replace the battery. REAL ISSUE: - USB doesn't always work when connected to PC. I've had to take out the camera from the mod and connect it directly to camera's USB. For that price I don't expect such problems.
I'm using the Media Mod on my Hero 10 for Vlogging and Youtube Stuff. The Good: Gives you connectivity for HDMI, Audio, Charging via USB C Audio quality is not that much better than the built in mic - slightly Gets you two cold shoe mounts Gives you an on screen audio level indicator The housing is quite resistant - dropped it and it did not take a big damage The Bad: Makes my Hero 10 freeze very often while charging with the Media Mod!!! If it does: You have to unscrew from the mount, take the camera out of the Mod, take your battery out and put everything back again - super annoying, this killed so many shots for me already!!! The worst: It's not telling you it crashed, so you point and shoot and - nothing happens as your picture is gone. I mostly experience crashes with the Mod, less without, even the Hero 10 freezes a lot which is a pain in the a…
Build quality is fine, fits go pro well,, but, did not record any sound when I was using it, dB bars were showing on the go pro screen that sound was being detected but no audio track on playback or in editing software. Mic detected was the media mod mic in settings. Had to hard reset my go pro so lost all my custom video settings and now it works as it should have from the start - sadly too late for my video
Received and tested. gopro hero12 black doesnt recognize it is connected. 1. Tested the gopro type-c by plugging directly into pc, no media mod: successful connection. 2. Tested the TRS connection mic that I am utilizing with pc: successfully working. 3. Tested gopro with media mod + TRS connection mic: does not work. 4. Tested gopro with media mod into PC via type-c connection: does not recognize (although it will begin to charge it) I have the latest updated firmware. Willing to update review once replacement is sent if maybe this is just a rare defective one.
Firstly, it's great that the camera has a dedicated mount to accommodate the light mod and the microphone is an improvement. It's obviously designed for bloggers, which in some respects makes me wonder about why you'd bother with wind reduction etc. It's clearly not designed for outdoor use, as is you're in the sun, the camera will work for a couple of minutes before overheating and will then switch off. If you're using battery power, you need to remove the camera from the mount to replace the battery and it seems discharge the battery very quickly. If you're using a mount, you need to unscrew the mount, then open the mount itself to remove the camera. It's super fiddly and with the more frequent battery changes it causes, the overheating issue because the case doesn't breathe, it's more trouble than it's worth. The wind reduction on the microphone would be useful, but it's worthless when the camera switches off constantly. Great idea, but this is an indoor accessory only and totally worthless for my needs. I should have researched it more, but c'mon Gopro, why make an outdoors camera which struggles to work outside in warm weather? Why supply accessories (such as the media mod and the silicone case with leash), which make the overheating issue worse?
It appears to cause overheating with the gopro hero 11 in short time. Between 15-18 mins then overheating when running at 4k60 w/gps mounted to windshield in interior w/climate at 72 degrees. Take the media mod away and the hero 11 ran a full battery out multiple times w/o overheating.
