I have been thinking about buying a portable mill for a few years. I am making good use of mature cedar trees that had rot at the bottom, but were sound a few feet up. I don,t need a loader or trailer to move the logs. I just set up on my woods road and make lumber.
Great product ,easy assembly solid well made worked and preformed exactly as described. Once I received the mill had it setup and cutting in around 2 hours. The mill cuts straight and true if setup right just make sure you use a chainsaw with a big enough engine size for the mill
With the price of lumber, and the cost and wait times for a quality bandsaw mill, you can't beat the Alaskan. If you have a good chainsaw, simply hook it up and cut boards. It's also convenient enough to take to the log instead of the hassle of having to bring the log to your permanent mill.
This mill worked FANTASTIC easy to adjust and use. I have cut ALOT of my own planks with this mill and it is very durable and simple to use. I had made a railing system with 2X4X12 and with a ripping chain its paid for itself within hours of cutting trees up. I HIGHLY recommend this product
Purchased this for my boyfriend for Christmas. Easy shipping, fast assembly, amazing quality! Purchased for creating a nice live edge bar top for our basement and we could not be happier! Thank you for supplying such an awesome product, we are lifelong customers!!
I was frustrated when this Alaska Mill arrived without the u-bolts! Fortunately this thing uses standard bolts, and I was able to obtain what I needed with a trip to the local hardware store. AND after that I was able to get it to work. The cutting was slow, but am hoping that can be improved with a ripping chain -- that is not the fault of the Alaska Mill itself.
I still end up with some minor twist, but overall this is much straighter than using a mill that doesn’t hold both ends of the bar. This is small with an 18” bar, so you can’t do logs of any substantial size. The inch measurements on the posts is not accurate and is also not in the best place to read so there is some trial and error with placement.
I have only used this once and it will take some practice. I was very happy with how rigid and solid the unit was. The only disappointment so far was that I didn't get some of the hardware (flat washers) that were needed. I fortunately had those handy.
I assembled this yesterday with a PoulonPro 18" chainsaw as an initial set up. I know, that saw only has a 42 cc engine, not the 50 cc engine listed as minimum. Two things... First, the clamps for holding the bar are too wide for the bar on the PoulonPro, and end up binding the chain in the track. You need to be sure your bar is about 2 1/2 inches wide, not the approximately 2 inches on the PoulonPro. Second, you unavoidably lose a lot of cutting space from the mounting system. I ended up with about 11" of workable space from the 18" bar. So, plan on a longer bar than you might think you need. I have not made my first cut yet, but I thought I would share the issues I've run into so far.
This unit will test your patience. I am running a Husqvarna Model 460 w/24 inch bar. If you tighten the pressure plates to hold the bar in place, the chain will not turn. If you finally find the magic point at which the bar will not move and the chain will, the bolts will vibrate loose in less than 5 minutes. The pressure plates should be rubber not metal or at least rubber covered metal and the bolts should be 1/4 inch longer
