I have been using Great Stuff (awesome name BTW) for years. Here is my take on it. Prepare your surface carefully. Clean, dry, non-oily, etc. Disposable gloves highly recommended Super sticky when wet Go s-l-o-w, what seems like a little expands 3 to 5 times Once dry, the foam hardens, yet is still a bit soft. For my application, I carve the foam with a long-bladed exacto knife. The sharper and thinner, the better. For my application, I applied silicone caulk to upper edges and recently-revealed air pockets. This is to create a smooth, water-shedding surface. Finally, allow caulk to dry and spray paint with enamel paint. For any exterior application, painting is required. The suns' rays will deteriorate and oxidize the surface. So paint must be applied if item is outdoors. There is quite a bit of material in one can. I would estimate approximately 1.5 cu. ft. of cured foam if you were to use it all at one go. By the way. You must use it all, or toss the unused portion, since the liquid foam inside the long applicator nozzle will dry and harden, making any future uses impossible.
Great Stuff expanding foam when used appropriately, does a fantastic job. Wearing gloves, safety glasses and a mask I was surprised at how easy it was to apply right where I needed it. It flows out like whipped cream, and the dispenser straw makes it easy to aim. I took my time and applied it slowly and evenly, don`t over fill, it expands as it cures. When dry it forms a permanent, weather and insect tight seal. You can cut or sand any excess, then paint or stain if you wish. Dow claims one 12oz can equals 19 tubes of caulk. They both have their uses, but I would use the foam seal more for unseen areas. My picture shows a gap above a basement window that was open to the outside. I applied the foam inside and it expanded out through the crack, a complete seal. The inside area was small, and I didn`t really notice a smell, and the outside was no problem either. If you buy it for a particular job, look around for any other places you may need it. This is a one shot deal, as the can and applicator seal themselves shut as it dries. This was a very positive experience, from a product I had doubts about.
I used it to fill a small gap around my storm door frame. I didn't realize how much it would expand. I left the excess for this review, but I intend to cut the excess away with a razor. It dries quickly. It seemed to have dried in about an hour or two. WEAR GLOVES and protect your furniture or anything close that could be damaged. After you're done using it, it will continue to push the product though the stem attachment so be sure to place it on top of something to catch it as it falls. Works for its intended purpose.
I had a new walkout door installed in the garage. I noticed a week or so ago that when there was hard rain, some water had came in somewhere under the door frame where it goes into the cement part of the house. There is already some old foam some had put in so I tried some of in a spot there the I thought the rain had come in. The applicator didn't stay on the can as well as I would have liked it to but it worked. I sprayed in the foam and later when I went back out to the garage, the foam had expanded and sealed very well where I had put it. The excess foam was very easy to cut with a razor and it looks good. Now after the trim is put up, I know I won't have to worry about anymore leaks.
Great stuff Capps and cracks is a very handy product to use around the house you can take thes frame inside your house around windows and seal them or the baseboards or around the pipes in the wall coming in. To the house or cracks in eves I would recommend this to anyone
Great Stuff really is great for sealing small gaps and cracks around the house. I have used it to seal gaps around pipes, door frames, etc. It can be messy, so be sure to use gloves and have a rag handy. Its really simple to use - attach the straw, shake, turn the can upside down, and fill the gap or crack. It expands a lot, so be conservative when applying. If you overfill, wait until it's dry and cut the excess away with a knife. A utility or serrated knife works well. After it's dry, it can be sanded or even painted, and it's water resistant and airtight. Definitely a great product to have in your home owner's maintenance arsenal.
Great Stuff products are always reliable. High quality. Do what they say they're going to do. The gaps & cracks version is no different. This version will fill larger gaps and cracks up to 1" wide. A little goes a long way. If you do overfill, let it dry and then trim with a razor blade or serrated knife. Make sure to pay attention to the date on the bottom of the can, as it dispenses best when used by that date. Can is 12 ounces. 8" tall.
I am not an artist with home improvements, but I have used Great Stuff to re-seal the threshold at our basement door. Last year, we realized that there was a small gap underneath the doorsill, and how did we know that? Little snakes! It may have only been one, but he kept coming back.. only to find him again the next day...suffice it to say, we had to use a sealer to make sure we didn't keep finding company from under the sill...so this time, I cleaned up the old foam and used the Great Stuff - and now if I can find the time to paint it white, it's going to look great! Plus, no snakes!
Great Stuff, perhaps for the experienced but not for this amateur. The nozzle is kinda cool but nowhere to store it once you use it. I guess that doesn't matter so much anyway because it seems to be a single use item. Unless of course, you can figure out how to clear the nozzle and tube after each use because residue remains and hardens. Make sure you do shake it a good while. Initially I just gave it a few shakes and only air came out. After a good shaking it's a lot like a whip cream can. It comes out thick and with a force. I used this to fill a small gap in my screen door where the draft and likely critters can crawl in. It did the job but it was hard to control. I'm not so sure either how I feel about trimming any excess as it hardens (in about 15min) like a foam, with a lot of air bubbles. There is an outer crust if you do not cut it. Also be careful not to get any on your hand. I did and it starts out sticky and then dries like crazy glue.
I used the foam sealant to DIY a repair job around the house. The nozzle for the foam was too big for the space that and I ended up using a putty knife to squeeze the foam between the gaps. I'll have to watch this joint over time to see if it will create an impermeable seal. If it works I'll only have to use this once a year at best.
