12/2025: My husband and I have eaten this for a number of years. As of this date's delivery, the formula seems like it has changed. It used to be more casserole-cohesive. You could scoop out a relatively stable "piece," that is to say. As of this date, though, it's more like a chili-style (soupy) base, and the potatoes are also not as firm as previously. I'm not sure what changed, but it's still good and a good value for the money. There also appears to be less "base" than previously, could be an economic decision. I'd still recommend, but if you liked the prior version, just know that it does seem like it's changed in texture and consistency.
Simple, hearty fare. This shepherd's pie is pretty much exactly as one might expect it to be. Nothing fancy, nothing spicy. It was just a tad salty and greasy for my preference as well as blander than I would have liked. That being said, there's a lot to be said for a dish/meal to be precisely what one would expect. Like chicken soup, sometimes a person wants to eat something that has no pretenses and is good simple food.
We keep one of these in the freezer most of the time for nights where we don't feel like cooking. It tastes pretty good, and adding a bit of garlic salt on top makes it better. Sometimes we get a lot more of the potato topping than the meat filling, but overall it's a solid dish. Easy to bake in the oven, no dishes needed.
They used to be good but changes were made. I had to stir in ketchup to make this taste better. Tasted like the package before adding ketchup. It seemed to me there was less in the cooking tray. The tray is not washable. This is ok if it cost half the price but not for thebprice it is at.
This product is dangerous to your health. I've cooked many different frozen family meals over the last few months, and track my indoor air quality. I have never seen a dish release this much VOC's before. Usually, a typical meal will increase VOC's inside my home to around 300-500 ppb. This dish in particular elevated indoor VOC's to about 1800ppb. It tasted great, but I'm extremely worried about styrene, formaldehyde, phthalates getting into my food (because it's definitely in the air).
This is a product, but I Purchased several times in the past and really liked it when I ate it tonight. It had a very weird chemical like aftertaste that did not taste good at all. There was something wrong with it. I think Wal-Mart needs to check what's been put in it or what chemicals are around them when they're making it but now I don't have the shepherds pie that I'll like. I hope they start putting other stuff out that's healthier.
Honestly, Idk what this even was. It certainly wasn't like any Shepard pie I've ever eaten. It was runny, had a disgusting "sauce" that I couldn't even identify. The potatoes were runny and unseasoned. I tried to cheat and not do the work to make one, and this is what I get. Just make it yourself. This is almost inedible.
A tasteless mush. The manufacturers could have elevated this dish to something tastier by the addition of rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, onion soup powder, chopped vegetables: celery, onion, carrots and green peas that one can actually see in the dish. The corn kernels can be omitted. And the addition of white pepper and powdered asiago cheese to the mashed potato would have made it tasty and edible. In conclusion, the price might be right, but the product is not recommended. So, save your hard earned money, and prepare your own Shepherd's Pie in a slow cooker. You will come home from work to the most delicious aroma in your kitchen, and enjoy a VERY tasty Shepherd's Pie. Slow cooker recipe serves 4 -5: 1/4 lb ground beef, 1 cup frozen peas and carrots, 1/4 cup frozen chopped onion, 1/4 cup chopped celery, 1 Tbs onion powder, and 1 beef bouillon cube and 3 tsps AP flour/ OR a 1/4 packet beefy onion soup powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 Tbs tomato paste, 1 tsp dried rosemary, 1/2 tsp dried thyme, 1 bay leaf, 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 1/2 cups room temperature water. Place room temperature ground beef and room temperature water in slow cooker, chop and stir until the ground beef is finely chopped throughout. stir in the rest of the ingredients until well combined. Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Before serving, stir and then top with instant mashed potato prepared with pepper, shredded cheese and salt to taste. This recipe can also be made with 1 lb ground beef and the above ingredients X4
Would have give zero stars across the board if I could. Don't waste your money!!! Canned dog or cat food would probably taste and smell better. it went straight down the garbage disposal after one fork full. it was also extremely salty and there were no microwave instructions. Shame on you Walmart for selling such a disgusting product!!
I bought this because the one I usually get is out of stock from Aldi. Gave it a try....and let me say I regret even trying it. It was the nastiest, tasteless mush pile. You can tell the potatoes were basically like instant watered down potatoes. The meat? Not sure what that was. Don't waste your $8. I beg of you! So disgusting. Very disappointed.
