Dear Knuckleheads, The small taps are meant to have the entire shaft slide into the handle, not just the square end. Down inside there are notches in which the square end fit into. The larger taps only require the square end to be inserted. If you're having a hard time trying to insert the entire shaft in (insert phallus joke here) after you've manhandled the knurled nut you will most likely need to splay the tines back open as you've most likely bent them in due to over torqueing. Sincerly, Gotta be smarter than the tool
I just purchased the same 12-piece set in metric. Its smallest size tap is 3mm-0.50 and the tap holder will not even come close to gripping that tap's square base to drive it. The 2nd smallest tap is the 4mm-0.70 and, maxing-out, the tap holder will at least turn that tap (though it will not grip it). I'll recommend the set, but with the reservation that tapping a 3mm-0.50 thread hole will be virtually impossible solely with what's provided in the kit.
The Tap handle won't squeeze small enough to hold the #6 tap. After three uses, the thread slip on the tap handle collet so it won't even hold the #8 tap!
The tap wrench chuck will not tighten down to hold the 6-32 and 8-32 taps. Fortunately I had a separate wrench that could and was able to complete the job. This set doesn't work as packaged.
It's hard to imagine a company, that claims to manufacture precision tools, could sell a tool set that, "by all appearances", has never even been tested (let alone looked at) before release to the market. That handle clearly not designed to clamp onto the 6-32 and 8-32 taps.
I bought the metric for use on rc hobby vehciles mainly needing the smaller two taps and dies. As long as you are using them in soft metals they are ok, anything harder than brass or aluminum they won't cut threads or even try to bite. Also same issue as others mentioned about shafts not fitting tap handle. Ended up using harbor frieght set of taps and dies that worked better, at least they would bite and cut.
