I have used this product three times now and I am impressed at how quickly I see a difference on my thin soled gelding. I packed my horses front hooves, wrapped them in vet wrap and kept him in his stall overnight. I left the remaining sole pack in the grooves and the frog to come out on its own. I have seen the horse move more comfortably, the frog growing back in, and extra new sole appear in days.
I used the sole pack after my horses lost her shoes and pads several days before the farrier was due--farrier had added a lot of copper sulfate to the dental impression material and the entire bottom of the foot was dry and hard--including the frog. I wrapped and booted her foot with this dressing in the commissures and over the frog. I wish I'd taken after photos, the frog looked 'normal' again and the packing/wrap and boot protected her new growth until the farrier could come out. We are working on getting her barefoot again after a year of over trimming (and the beginning of road founder). I know I will be using this off and on for awhile!
I have always used Magic Cushion to pack my horses' feet during long horse shows, and it has always worked. However, the application was messy and less than ideal, and good luck getting it off of anything you didn't want it to touch! Sole Packs are so easy, they measure the amount out for you and make the process much cleaner. They are also a good bit cheaper than Magic Cushion and I find the results are the same for my horses.
I've always seen Magic Cushion used in barns, so when I brought my horses home and the OTTB started getting sore, I went to go buy that stuff...until Smartpak recommended this to me. IT'S AMAZING. So easy to use, idiot-proof, stays in place even if he loses his boots and vetrap (for a day, but it will eventually work its way out), and best of all, provides incredible relief INSTANTLY. My poor guy was head-bobbingly foot sore (the cause of which is a long story and we're working on all the underlying issues with actual medical care), so I packed his front hooves with this, covered the pack with shavings, and vetraped/duct taped. His whole demeanor changed immediately...he went from cranky princess to his usual prancy princessy self. My routine was to let his wraps work off on their own, then repick/pack/wrap 48 hours later. I kept this up for a few weeks and the next time my farrier came out, even he asked what I'd been doing...my horse was sound, his soles were nice and hard and clean, and smelled amazing even covered in manure. I'm a lifetime buyer.
I love everything about these packs! They are easy to use and work great. I have used all sorts of packing in the past (epsom salt + sore no more, animalintex poultice pads, etc) but this is by far the easiest and cleanest thing I have used. I would recommend wearing gloves though, the pine tar still tends to get all over. I just plop the blob into his hoof, mush it into all the crevices and wrap it up with vet wrap/duct tape. My horse pulled a shoe and was foot sore (even after the shoe went on). I packed his hoof for a night with Sole Pack and he was good to go the next day. I recommend this to all my friends.
I bought these for my horses first winter barefoot and they've helped tremendously with soreness. When the weather snapped and the ground froze he came in pretty sore a few times but I packed his feet with these and within one or two nights he was back to normal. The amount of packets you get is great and the packing in each packet is more then enough. I actually just split them in half and only used a half per hoof. The only thing I found out the hard way was the packing sticks to cement (but not to much else besides the sole) and it will pull it out of the foot so I packed him in his stall and the shavings helped keep it in. The longest the packing stayed in was two days with stall/turnout on frozen ground without any sort of boot or wrap holding it in. I haven't used any other packing products on the market and I probably won't after trying this one. The ingredients are also pretty basic which is nice and you can feel the springy-ness of it. This ones a keeper!
Hawthorne's hook packs are the absolute best! I use them anytime one of my horses is developing an abscess or already has one. Extremely easy to use and absolutely no mess. They really work!
I used Hawthorne's Sole pack for the first time on my QH. He suffers from small, tender hooves that dry out easily. However, he also gets thrush easily, despite prevention plans. This pack changed everything! He is back to solid, healthy hooves - I even ride him barefoot with no problems! I intend on starting to use Hawthorne's Sole Pack on my retired pony - a perfect treat for her old feet! You have to try this - it's really worth it!
I used this product years ago when I was horse sitting for a friend. Her yearling mare put a nail through the side of her hoof and I packed this in every day and in pulled out lots of puss (and helped prevent further problems!). I purchased these to add to my own first aid kit because the individual packaging ensures that it won't dry out and it's convenient for travel!
An excellent hoof packing in an easy-to-use form. Just take out of the plastic sack, unwrap the inner casing to expose the "mudpie" of packing and place against the inside of the hoof. Use the inner casing to protect hands from the poltice as you press it into the frog and onto the sole. Then run your tape or wrap over the inner packing. Works great - I love the way Venice Turpentine helps my horse, but it is SO messy to apply. The Hawthorne's Sole Pack has VT plus more ingredients and is much cleaner and keeps the hoof much cleaner. I love it.
