Bought it to replace an older West Bend of the same type. Looked for others like this one for less but didn't match the design. So this was $40. I know the models( much like cars) are lighter, cheaper material and cost more. And it was. Very light and thin aluminum, lighter glass top and base. No heat resistant handles, just the pot. If I paid $20, which is I was hoping to pay, I might be satisfied with the product. I doubt this one will last as long as our older one. 25 years or more?
This slow cooker has an amperage on the base that is much lower than the amperage on the base of my old, 4-quart slow cooker. Since the pot fits both bases, I changed this pot to the base of my 4-quart cooker, and used the new cord that came with the 5-quart cooker. (I needed to replace the 4-quart cooker because the pot was getting rusted after 35 years of use, and the cord was getting very brittle where it plugged into the base). Using the old base with the new pot and cord, I can say that this cooker will perform up to the standards of the old cooker. It's great for roasting a pot roast while we're at church on Sunday morning. I put the meat in before we leave, and by noon it's ready to eat. I gave the product three stars because, using the new base, it takes about twice as long to cook a roast as the 4-quart cooker did. I'm sure this is a "feature," but for me it is a detriment.
I've been looking for this type of crockpot to replace my old one just like it. I love it because it is not too heavy to handle. I love the rectangular shape to fit things like spare ribs and whole chickens. Surprisingly this can also be used on the stove top for browning or in the oven.
Bought this to replace a nearly identical 15 yr old cooker that I ruined due to my own negligence. Great for cooking a little or a lot, has 5 cook settings (not just 2 or 3) and can be used on the cooktop or in the oven. Super easy cleanup. Love it!!!
i love this cooker. i had one for over 20 years and finally decided it was time to replace it.i like that this newer model has a glass lid as my older one had a plastic one.also the pot is deeper and will hold more. i always seem to reach for this cooker and not my big crock pot. i think that i will purchase more for the perfect gifts this year.
The family has had these cookers since West Bend introduced them. They lasted forever and did the job. This one I have only used once, it seems to be working the same, maybe the heat is not quite as high on the high setting, but it still cooked a medium picnic roast to perfection. Hope it lasts as long as the rest, and yes, it does have the glass top which is superior to the plastic ones in my opinion. Buy the glass top one.
My only problem with this is it is deeper then my old one I am replacing. The glass lid was a wonderful surprise as my old one had a plastic lid that over time discolored. It is just the right size for a RV storage. The other surprise, we received it about a week before it was due to arrive and just in time for our next trip!
This Slow Cooker really does "one pot" meals. It can be used on the stove top to brown meats, then transferred to the base for the slow cooking process; it even can go into the oven. Just wish the lid would close a little tighter and not have a gap on the side where steam can escape. I do like that the pot is light weight and easy to clean, no dishwasher needed.
Walmart did an EXCELLENT job processing my order and delivered it within 2 days, during the holidays no less. But West Bend failed in the quality I expected from them. I have owned this same slow cooker from them for 20+ yrs and needed to replace the bottom heating element. Since that wasn't available, I bought this new 5qt. and boy was I surprised of how flimsy it is. Nothing like in the past. This is very light weight. the handles are molded into the overall container, unlike the handles I had. The glass top is thinner and doesn't sit well on the container. the heating element appears to be identical to the old and so is the cord. It does the job, but like many things these days, just isn't what it use to be. I would recommend buying it if you just want it for around the house, but wouldn't travel with it full. Maybe the one with the carrying case is made better. It's not the price that makes it attractive. The price is basically the same as others.
I bought this as a birthday present for my sister. Both of us have had this slow cooker for many years (over20 years). We absolutely love, love, love it! A few weeks ago as we were talking long distance on the phone, my sister mentioned that her West Bend slow cooker was getting old (just like us). We are older and it isn't very easy to lift heavy items. Not a problem with this slow cooker. I ordereed her a red one with the tote but the red was unavailable at the time I needed it; so she got another grey one. Both of us use our West Bend slow cookers every week and neither of us have ever had a problem of any kind. I sure would highly recommend this product.
