I read reviews and bought it anyway. Live and learn. Unit smoked along all the metal and emitted some noxious fumes for at least 10 minutes. There's no temp control. You get what you get. It heated up in a couple minutes, enough to melt solder. Solder wasn't very good, although it may have been my technique. It would bead up and cool fast, so I've got tiny metal marbles all over. After about 10 minutes of use, the unit cooled too much to melt solder, so I unplugged it and let it rest, thinking it overheated. Tried again when it was cool, and it wouldn't heat up enough to melt the solder. It fizzled the water in the sponge I was using to clean, but never hot enough to solder. It's not balanced so the little stand that comes with doesn't work well. A simple kickstand built into the unit would've been much better. Hyper Tough has been great for other stuff so I thought the solder iron would be fine. I'm just making a few small and simple connections. I should've spent more money on another brand.
Waste of money. Took forever to heat up. Smelled like it was going to burst into flames. Couldn't melt solder. Now I have a halfway deconstructed electronic on my table with a useless soldering iron next to it. I was able to unsolder 4 wires before giving up on how long everything took, thought it might fry the motherboard.
Cheap basic soldering iron. light weight, weak stand for the iron falls over easily. took a long time to heat up to temp. If cost is an overriding factor, this will do the job. would not buy again
It's 30 Watts so it won't work on computers but it's good for big wood burning projects, large jewelry or defense of home invasions if you have time to let it warm up it's very hot and sharp.
I'm not gonna lie, initially i was a bit apprehensive about what the quality was going to be like with Hyper Tough products but after several purchases now, I must say, I'm impressed. This Soldering Iron, follows suit with the Hyper Tough reciprocating saw, groove joint pliars, and rotary tool i purchased recently, also from Walmart (the saw and rotary tool literally have a better quality feel and works better than the DeWalt and Dremal I had before, respectively. ) That being said, I highly recommend Hyper Tough products for value and quality.
just barely heats enough to melt the solderNot worth the money, and solder will not adhere to the material.
Very good for the price and happy that it comes with an extra solder replacement head. Highly recommend!
This pencil soldering iron does everything that I need. I replaced a cordless iron that finally stopped, with this and it works great. Heats quickly and is lightweight and balanced. Tips are easily changed. I recommend this product for all DIY or home use.
Let me start off with that I have a few soldering irons ranging from a Hakko FX 888 to a Pinecil portable pen. This Hyper Tough falls right into where it supposed to and that is very entry basic soldering. It is the run of the mill inexpensive soldering iron that you can get at almost any store. What does make this unit stand out from all those others is that it is Hyper Tough which means Walmart will be there if it fails within its warranty and that it will probably last you a long time if you only plan on using this every once in a while during the year. It heats up at an okay speed and does get hot enough to solder, I would only attempt plumbing work after you gained some experience with this and how hot it gets. The basic fat tip that is included won't have you doing any small/tiny projects or circuit boards but then the person that buys this probably won't be attempting to do so. All in all not bad for the value you get and that if anything does happen you can just run to Walmart for warranty claims.
It's a 30W soldering iron that works right out of the package. It was nice that it came with a tip pre installed, an additional spare tip, rosin core solder, and a stand. I wish it had a small tin with a sponge to help clean the tip. The stand was a little flimsy in my opinion and I was worried about the plastic melting. If you've never used one before, I'd suggest watching some videos as instructions are also not included.
