Action Flick

Good movie. Plenty of action. As usual, Jason is the hero, although reluctant. He has to defeat man and beast.

Worst Fantasy Movie of All Time?

papageno19 December 12, 2008

Back before I got into Blu-ray I bought a copy of In the Name of the King on DVD. That officially marks the last time I buy a movie without reading up on it first. I typically like all fantasy genre movies, even some of the older cheesier ones, but this movie makes even Dungeons and Dragons look like a Shakespearean work. This movie was based off of the Dungeon Siege video games so I had low expectations going into it, but it still disappointed. Jason Statham is best left to action movies, mainly because his acting is limited to an angry thug with few lines. Most of the cast listing reads like a list of people that have no business doing fantasy movies or even period pieces. First of all, everyone in the main character's village has a different accent whether it be Statham's Australian accent or Ron Perlman's blatantly American accent, so apparently the speech coach quit early on in the filming process. To compound this Perlman consistently sounds like he's reading off cue cards giving his character a comical air even in serious scenes. Matthew Lillard takes on his most annoying role yet in this movie and does it with horrible over-acting reminiscent of an amateur auditioning for a role in dramatic theater. Also guilty of this, Lee-lee Sobieski, Burt Reynolds, and Ray Liotta. The one saving grace in this film is John Rhys-Davies' acting ability. He's a veteran of this genre including 2 roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He does, however, seem in this film to be disheartened by the movie's sheer level of mediocrity, and his British accent taken together with those of Statham and Perlman does nothing but further prevent immersion in the movie. Now this movie may not be the worst movie of all time (that crown goes to Christmas Evil, which isn't even a funny kind of bad movie), but watching this movie you'll half expect to see the cast of Superbad appear before its over. This might be worth renting just to see how bad it is, but don't buy it. Ever.

DVD was scratched

amydarlene1981 April 22, 2008

I dont know how many of these DVD's were purchased and were defective, but I took mine out and put it in the DVD player, and all through the movie it paused for so long of periods, and when the movie was about 30 minutes from the end it froze completely. I dont think I can return this movie after it has been opened, but I will try. Well, anyways it seemed pretty good from what I saw. The bad thing about it was that it was a birthday gift to my husband, and he couldnt finish watching it.
