Don't pay attention to the older reviews, which are not reviews of this model. It does have large breathing spaces in the front of the muzzle. The picture really does not show this. It is a beefy muzzle, sure to stand up to the rigors of turnout. I have used the Best Friends Grazemore muzzle for years, but now they are hard to find. This is a new model. Through all the muzzles that I have used, the Best Friends muzzle has been the best for comfort and adjustability. The holes on the bottom do not get enlarged like the cheaper brands.
My horse gets into everything in the pasture yet this product manages to stay on him. It's not fussy for humans to take on-and-off so the barn manager doesn't mind it. The fit is great, and its made of good quality materials. There is soft, leather padding above the ears and the muzzle itself does not have any brittle plastic or edges. I've not used a grazing muzzle before and have been more than pleased with how this product has worked out.
My horse has taken right to it. No rubbing on his precious face. Hopefully see some weight loss soon. I've only had the muzzle for a couple of weeks. Wasn't sure about the leather but it's holding up fine.
This is s Great grazing muzzle. It has multiple places for adjustments and is working out very well. Thanks for an excellent product Smart Pak!
This is sturdy and no problems keeping it on my mare. It is, however, heavy and so while it's a great backup muzzle it's not my first choice in the Texas heat as I don't think it's as ventilated as another option I have on hand. My horses drink from extra large tanks so I can't comment on whether it works with smaller automatic waterers.
I've had the need for grazing muzzles for many years - There have been many products along the way - Best Friend has been a staple in the industry - this one is almost perfect in my mind. As with many other comments, the crown leather is too thin - but they have made slight changes to accommodate better breathing - I think they could still be larger for better air flow. All of the horses/ponies I have a need for muzzling are VERY CREATIVE at finding ways to remove their headgear - most are unable to wear fly masks as that makes the muzzle slide over easier. I'd like to see the crown doubled with THICK leather, not paper thin leather - and I don't need the padding - that just makes it slide easier. I've replaced the crown with a double stitched version, which allows for breakaway in a true emergency, but not just in an attempt to get rid of it. I also braid a section of mane about 4 inches wide and put the crown through that braid to keep it in place.
I needed another cob size grazings muzzle but I do not like the padded leather crown. It is that rubber stuff that gets really too warm for horses does not breath.
After wearing the grazing muzzle for one week, two of the halter plastic strap adjusters broke. I suspect my gelding either rolled or was 'horsing around'. Otherwise I was happy with the muzzle. SmartPak immediately replaced and hopefully this problem does not recur.
I had to by two last spring because the rubber on the muzzle is not as thick as the regular a Best Friend muzzle and the hole became very large after a couple of months. Usually I only have to have one per season from April to December.
I have to be honest. It's possible that this worked as it should have. However, I want to put this review out here because I want to know if others have the same thing happen (indicating a design flaw)...My pony has been using the Best Friend Grazing Muzzles for several years. Never any problems. When buying new ones for this season, I saw this padded leather crown one and thought, "the more comfortable for him, the better." When it arrived, I felt the leather strap was quite thin. He wore it for 6 days before I found it lying in the field. The leather was torn apart at one of the buckles. Like I said, it's possible that he got it caught on the fence somehow and the breakaway strap performed as it should have. But, since we have never had any issues in the past with the old designs, I'd like to hear if anyone else experiences the same thing.
