When it comes to hoof injuries and turnout, it appears that less is more; this hoof sock provided more comfortable turnout for my horse than a rigid therapy boot. I had my big TB's shod hoof taped with Vetrap and Elastikon before putting the hoof sock on (I didn't need to use either insert that came with it); it is easy to fit the hoof sock over bandaging and it secures over the top with 2 velcro straps. The hoof sock enabled 12 hours of daytime turnout. I kept 2 hoof socks in constant rotation, and they lasted between 5 and 7 days each before wearing out (one sock blew after 6 hours, but that was the exception, by far). I will always keep at least one hoof sock on hand for emergencies.
I have this because my horse keeps loosing his shoes. I put this on while waiting for ferrier and they work well for about 5 days. I wash them and use inserts to cushion his soles. Some socks seem to hold up better than others, one got a hole within a few days while others have lasted over several usages.
Well, I purchased a hoof sock 4 years ago and used it 4 times for about 3 weeks each for a 17.3 Cyldesdale cross to cover a wrapped hoof recovering from an abscess. It was used for turn out and stood the test. Other than the velcro wearing out, it was perfect and super durable. I decided to order a new one to have a spare, and was tired of ductaping it closed. I noticed the new one seemed to be of new fabrics and much tinner. Well it lasted one night of turn out and the bottom fell apart. It cames apart at the seams and shredded the bottom! Hence...the thinner fabric. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! Would not buy another!!!
I wish I could report differently, because it would be awesome if it worked, but the hoof pushed through the toe after 4 hours of turnout in a small grassy pasture. Great idea, doesn't hold up. Maybe if just used in the stall it would have been ok.
This is a boot sock that should be labeled for SHORT TERM/possibly supervised usage only. I left these on with hoof packing, and the boot shifted around, resulting in me scrapping my horses hooves and hocks before a show ! I could not even get the boot sock cleaned out enough to reuse if I had wanted too, to had to throw away ! The Velcro does not seem to hold sock in place !
I bought this as a backup over a year ago. My horse had used a easyboot Rx several times, and the final time I used it on her back foot and she tried to kick it off and the boot was near the end of it's life. So this I bought to have on hand. Fast forward to this week, my other horse had an abcess blow out her heel, so we soaked her and then I went to grab this hoof sock to cover the bandage afterwards. I opened the brand new package only to find a DIRTY hoof sock. The inside was clean, but there was dirt all over the bottom like someone tried it on then returned it. It wasn't visible when I bought it as the sock was folded up nicely in the clear packaging. Really disappointed. Needless to say, this was my backup and I threw it on her anyways. Like other people have said, it will rotate around the hoof, and the XXL is too small for a full draft horse. I found that the velcro stayed on really well, but the rotating made it slip down. Ultimately it lasted from mid morning until early evening. The horse was in a small soft dirt paddock, and with a painful abcess she wasn't moving around much, yet her hoof busted through the side of this sock. I then dressed and wrapped with vetwrap and this lasted all night, still intact this morning. Looking closer at the sock, the bottom is a kind of woven yarn like material, and easily frayed at the seam to the upper nylon material. Overall, this was a very disappointing purchase from Smartpak. Usually I am always happy with my purchases, but not this time and won't be buying this product again.
I used this on a yearling WB who had a nasty abscess and was on stall rest. Horse had a epsom poultice, diaper and then this sock. Thought it would save me duct taping etc. but it only held up for 5 days before she torn thru the bottom. She was on rubber mats and straw bedding, if that makes any difference.
Ordered this in a bind. I have a draft horse with an abscess and I'm a small person. Having to hold, wrap, tape is very taxing on me. Paid for overnight shipping, 24 hours of wear later, a horse on stall rest and it's completely tearing apart.
I bought this for my QH and it only lasted 3 days in a bedded stall!! It is a great concept especially when your horse has an injury that requires wrapping. The material inside stayed dry for the time it was on the hoof but the bottom sides wore holes in it after the third day of use. The stall was dry with a thick layer of shavings.
I was so desperate that I bought this and paid to have it Fed Ex overnight. Complete waste of money. It lasted about 3 hours for a horse standing in a stall with Soft Stall flooring. It was completely shredded on the foot which was the point in having it. Do NOT waste your money. Duck tape is far cheaper and works.
