I bought this vise from the local hardware store. Mounted the vise to my work bench with four bolts. It was solidly locked down. After using it for several projects I noticed, that there was some slop in the swivel base. I dismounted the vise and flipped it over and realized the bolt that held the base to the vise was undersized for the bases hole. I was able to add a brass bearing to the gap and now its has a smooth swivel with no slop.
Solid vice overall... A little pricey
Had a 5" swivel base Irwin vise for about 2-3 years. Worked fine for light duty jobs until the u shank portion of the vise sheared clean in half, sending it flying out the backside into my wall and leaving the vise completely destroyed. Completely unacceptable. A 5" vise touted as "heavy duty" shouldn't fail just while tightening the vise. I hadn't even exerted any force or stress on the vise, I was just tightening the jaws onto some material. I'm a big Irwin fan, got a toolbox full of their hand tools, quick clamps and driver sets. This is the first Irwin tool to fail me, hopefully just a fluke. Perhaps Irwin can make it right, if so I'd be happy to share their resolution in an updated review.
I have had the 5" heavy duty bench vise for 3-4 years and I just had the u shank portion shear off while I was tightening it on on a 1/2 in piece of light metal. This vise is supposed to be a heavy duty vise and should not snap off with small pieces of metal like I had happen. Was a great vise up until this, will not be buying another Irwin "Heavy duty" vise, since it is not heavy duty at all.
The heavy duty muti function vise has weak locking jaws. But they did uphold the warranty after calling and sending pictures. I haven't received my new one im still waiting after three weeks.
I bought this vice for knife making. Luckily I don't need it for anything heavy duty. I had to make a collar to go between the vice and the mount because it would not turn. Over all I am not impressed.
Would not go all the way out. Would stick. I took it back and found a smoother, bigger, and cheaper priced one at tractor supply.
Dang, almost made it to two years, but the inner just snapped on me. I run a small bicycle repair shop and though we get style points for having such a big heavy vice, I'm a little disappointed that I've gotta go find a new one.
My vise broke the same way. Not a full metal vise, only pot metal and hollow.
worked ok for about 10 mts broke now cant use can
