I LOVE these pliers. I used the traditional channel-lock type for years, but when I tried these, I retired the channel-locks from my tool pouch. The fine adjustment of the Speed-lock makes it easier to find a position that provides maximum bite with minimum hand effort. The version with the notched jaws are especially useful for round pipe and compression style EMT fittings. And the best part is, with the Speed-lock design, no more fumbling around trying to find the correct seting to match the job at hand. Just place the upper jaw in position and slide the lower jaw into place. Priceless!
These pliers work great. I like the push button slide adjustment on them. They were much cheaper on Jet than my local hardware store.
I purchased 6 of these, I own the 6", 8", 10" & 12" grove lock plus the 8"&12" straight jaw pliers . These are great for plumbing repairs , great for automotive repairs, great for grabbing cylinders in industrial pipe repairs and more. I just wish they were tougher metal, made in taiwan or the USA and they would endure alot longer . Otherwise, these are great for radiator hoses, PVC, copper, steam pipes and more I also do Tool reviews on YouTube, just go search for The Backwoods Mechanic to view the reviews yourself
Great tool! Not sure why some are giving this tool a bad rap. I use them all the time and they work great. I've never had any kind of a product failure. For the people hurting themselves, maybe they should keep their fingers out of the Jaws! I Love mine, just order another pair. Thanks Vice-Grip!!
This tool is great. It holds it's adjustment when one handle slips out of your hand, unlike the groove jaw type. And it adjusts by sliding while still on the object. My only complaint is the the jaw is so wide. I kept my other brand pliers because they will get into places this one won't. Realistically, you need 2 anyway for plumbing.
Diesel mechanic with 20+yrs exp. I've been using them for 3yrs now with absolutely no problems. I love the functionality of them. I use the 10" with the offset jaws which easily grips around bolt and nut heads. Took away a star because one of the grips tends to slide down. One nice thing about the grips is they can be wiped down and cleaned with acetone without damaging the logos or the colors!! ....A quick message to any young techs just starting out....Make sure your tools are affordable enough to where they are making you money and not you working to pay off tool debt.
I have several of the groove lock pliers and I really like them. I saw a set with the 8 and maybe the 10 inch pliers and bought it with high hopes. Right out of the box, the smaller pliers won't hold when pressure is applied. The mechanism slips and won't hold up to more than 30 or so lbs of pressure. The larger pair is great but not the 8 inch. I bought a second pair and it's the same thing. I don't know if it's quality control or poor design but the smaller pair is a disappointment.
I've had these for about three years, and that about how much I used them, roughly 3 times, inconvenient because you need both hands to make an adjustment to the setting. Then when they strip out from turning a simple 3/4" pipe fitting you have smashed fingers, and I'm not talking about some crusty-rusted corroded fitting.
Wish I had spent my money on real Channellocks. These only lasted not even a year, Now when you apply force they just pop and close up smashing your fingers. Good thing they are lifetime warranty, going in to have them replaced...again.
Just like the rest of the reviews, they strip out and smash your fingers, also the grips slip right off. I have an old pair that has never had a problem but I have stripped 4 pairs in the last 6 months. The warranty replacement isn't worth constantly having a smashed hand and a tool that fails when you need it the most. These were once a nice tool to have but because of this I will probably never buy another Irwin product. Maybe if I keep returning them you people will get it right, I'm off to get yet another pair. Thanks.
