3 years and running strong

TinTin33 April 25, 2022

I bought the charge 4 in 2019 October, this far a great product, easy to carry form factor, great battery life and excellent sound quality. Unfortunately doesn't sync with the Charge 5 , JBL should have retained sync between generations.

You won't believe this!!!

Kimmer April 3, 2022

I have the JBL Charge 4. Amazing true story! I accidentally dropped it in the burning barrel while burning trash. Unbelievably it still works. Check out the photos. Only thing is I can't go real loud or it starts distorting. It never used to. And doesn't hold a charge as long. I love my speaker it goes everywhere I go. I love loud music!! But unfortunately it stays home now. I am saving for the JBL CHARGE 5. But something keeps coming up and It's hard to get enough saved Hopefully by summer. Amazing speaker. It's a survivor like me!! Awesome speaker!! So it's waterproof and pretty dang heat proof. Can't wait to get my next new speaker. Kim

Charge series evolved!

Steven S January 14, 2019

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When I first read the JBL charge 4 had done away with dual drivers in favor of one proprietary driver. I thought this was crazy (not in a good way) until I listened. I felt testing this new single driver against a charge 3 dual driver would be a fun and fair comparison. Standing in front anywhere from 5-15'ish feet, I could not tell a single driver from a dual driver'd charge 3. If anything, the charge 4 has more to give in ways of overall power, sound stage, tuning and loudness. The differences seem to fluctuate depending on music. For example, Gorillaz and Princess Freesia/Soulpersona (fist bump Oluv) gave the charge 4 the advantage over the charge 3 in overall soundstage and really showed a better tuned speaker. The charge 3 sounded as if there was some type of fabric wrapped around it. Rock like Jane's Addiction seemed to make the charge 3 & 4 sound more similar than different. Maybe this was a midrange thing? Stevie Wonder and Adele (once again) showed a much better tuned charge 4 vs. the charge 3 with more defined, crisp highs, cleaner but sweet lows and just overall more power and better separation. Lumineers also had more of a cleaner sound while the charge 3 just sounded like there was fabric wrapped around it..kind of a light muffle compared to the charge 4. I can kind of see why people claim the charge 3 and 4 sound similar but I am not one of those people. The charge 3 was a rock-solid speaker for its time but JBL DID evolve it with the charge 4. After comparing the 2 speakers' side by side in different rooms/distances/genres, I see what JBL did there with the charge 4 and I was pleasantly surprised. My hat is off to them for improving without straying from an already great recipe. Depending on your budget, the charge 3 is solid BUT if you have a little extra to drop in the charge 4 definitely do it! Minor side note, the charge 4 does not include a wall plug but does come with a USB A-USB C cable to charge it but you must provide your own wall/usb charger. The charge 4 uses a USB C cable to charge itself but it does have the USB A output in case you want to charge your phone while on the go.

Exactly the Right Size

Moli January 14, 2019

Absolutely love this speaker. I live a pretty active lifestyle, and this speaker is the perfect size to take with me wherever I go. Its about the size of a water-bottle and fits in the side-pocket of my backpack. Great for hiking/day trips. The durable/waterproof design and ability to charge my phone are just bonuses. Don't worry about it being too small though, it gets louder than I'd ever need. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Good speaker

Beaver July 14, 2022

Just recieved this speaker yesterday and I love it. I haven't used the charge feature yet and I was hoping it would be a bit louder but it's good quality sound. The packaging is super cute too!

Excellent speaker, app need work

DaveD May 30, 2019

Great sound coming out JBL Charge 4. It has great mid and high with a touch of extra bass you can enjoy even in low volume. The only bad thing is the app, there is no way to adjust the sound with a equalizer. JBL need to get some good App developers and improve the app and add EQ.

Not water resistant

Wrinkly ballz September 17, 2025

Okay so I have had this speaker for three years and it has been okay. It charges like an iPhone so if it's dead you have to wait for a good while while it charges before using it. But my speaker just had its first experience in the rain and now looks like a wrinkly mess. ( mess is the PG version).

Buggy connection with multiple speakers

Anonymous August 28, 2020

I bought these two speakers with the intention of using them both in sync to have plenty music. But I DO NOT RECOMMEND these to anyone. The connection between the two speakers is really bad. There are sound loss and bugs really often, even when the cellphone is a few meters away from both. The sound quality and bass are also really disappointing for the price point.

Charge 4 won't charge

Choncho June 8, 2020

I bought this product and was stoked to turn it on and was quickly dismayed that the charging cable that came with it had a gash through it clear to the inner wires. But not only that, the chord would not fit correctly into the speaker's port and would wiggle around.
