I have a smaller simpler unit that I've used for years, and loved. This one is larger, but has much more information and even an option that my old one lacks. My previous one simply beeped and lit up to indicate voltage was present. This one has a panel that shows actual information, although I've not been able to correlate anything exact about them. The instructions say that the percentage will increase with energized items, and I can mostly duplicate that by checking outlets themselves, just beeping and no percentage, to higher percentages then when I run it along the power cord of something that is plugged in. But the thing I *DO* appreciate here is the sensitivity button. My old one operates like this one does at the default power on setting, where it'll start lighting up 5 or 6 inches away from a switch or plug already, and will light up when I touch certain parts on the outside of my Keurig coffee maker. It is sensitive and works great there. But if you hit the sensitivity button, it really limits that, and gets to the point where it will only light up when you're actually touching the powered item directly. Sound is clear and obvious, as is the lighting effect. You'll have no doubt at all that something is live when testing with this. The other feature my old one lacked was an LED off of the tip - this one is pretty bright and does a great job of lighting up the area to make it easily visible even in an area that doesn't have good lighting. I love these when I'm replacing switches or outlets, to verify that circuit is dead when I hit the circuit breaker in the basement.
