My 10 year old son was able to download the app and build this robot without instructions from me. It was very enjoyable watching him figure out how to put it together. There are no tools required to put this together. The robot is very fun to play with and change colored lights as well as program for different movements that my son decides to do. It is a great learning tool to practice programming. He can't wait to get another robot so they can interact with each other and battle. My kids LOVE this thing! The instructions to build it is in the app once you download it. They have videos for each step if you are unsure what it is asking, but they are all very clear. The videos helped my kids be able to build it alone, which they loved. Once its together the app becomes the controller to move it around or make a code to control it. Making it dance was the favorite. We have two so we got to test out battling them and that is really fun. The lights change and makes sound effects, very interactive. I highly recomend this. 8 year old was super excited to put this together and try it out. He had a few problems putting it together, but 10 year old helped and it went smoothly. Once put together, I was slightly concerned about how durable it would be. Turns out, very! This thing ran across hard wood, tile, rugs and was accidentally kicked by 4 year old. This is a well thought out toy!! You can charge it with the attached USB, and there's no separate controller, you use an app on your smart phone or tablet. Kamigami cricket robot was such a fun toy for my son. He is 9 years old and is very into robotics and building stuff. Building it was very easy and I love how the app gives you step by step instructions with video instructions as well. That was such a huge help and easy to understand. I did have to help him place the little black connector pieces as it did need a little bit of extra strength to click. Everything was good quality but the only thing I would say is you have to be very careful when taking off the shell of the robot as the pieces are fragile. I did manage to crack a little bit of it trying to place it on the robot. Once built it connects by Bluetooth to the app quick and easily. Making the robot move is easy and there's a ton of call different features including different movements, lights, and also sounds. Overall this is a very fun toy for my son and the whole family. nitial impression Overall it is a worthwhile toy. The kids enjoy playing with the different functions of the robot. I especially like the fact that the robot can be easily controlled via an app on a smart device. Comments on the Instructions for assembly The instructions were not intuitive or described well. I doubt the typical 9 year old could assemble the toy by him/herself without a parent's intervention. In fact there were times where I was momentarily confused due to unclear instruction and I consider myself reasonably mechanically inclined. I will mention that the videos help to an extent. However, if the creators are willing to dedicate a paragraph in the instructions to describe why the robot functions as it does (i.e. has certain movement in efforts to mimic real world insects), additional assembly wording should be added for greater clarity. Additionally I believe the manufacturer should place a small card in the packaging stating that the assembly instructions are given electronically via the app. I realize the quick start guide mentions this but it's the 3rd or 4th step of the document. Hardware The hardware for the robot was exceptional. I could tell that the manufactures took the time to think through potential issues that could arise during the building of the project. I was impressed that the producers gave spare connecting rivets to replace the ones that inevitably get damaged. The extra parts were essential to the completion of the project since a few were damaged along the way. The completed robot is sturdy and built to last. The movement mechanisms also function well on different surfaces (tile, wood, & carpet). Misc observations Battery life seems to be more than adequate. The additional functions of the robot are a nice touch (dancing, programming of automated functions, etc.). The completed robot is aesthetically pleasing. Virtually no lag in response time between controller and robot. Haven't tested range of controller vs. robot but don't recall reading anything suggesting ideal operating range. My son initially didn't understand how this worked. He's one that likes to try to build things without the instructions. He finally realized he needed to download an app to make the whole thing work. It's a little disappointing that they need to have a current operation system to make the toy work. They have minimal phones and tablets, that he is actually grounded from right now. My son is in to robots and programming so I though this would be great for him. We were unable to put it together without first downloading an app. There are no directions in the box for assembly. Took about 30 min to assemble and then was able to play. Very neat features on the app to get it to move and light up.
