Overall, this is a great kit!
I call it our Elder Escape Tool!
Built in strap cutter %26 window breaker for emergency water or wreckage escape needs.
But truth be told, I had previously purchased those less expensive small tools as adult Christmas stocking stuffers. Along with pepper spray %26 r@pe whistles for teenaged granddaughters. Who said you can't be practical with stocking stuffers!?
That said, my 40-something son transports a few different elder friends %26 family members to their doctor's appointments %26 different activities. Some of them are increasingly having more difficulty getting in %26 out of his vehicle...
He recently saw a friend of his using something like this for her grandmother %26 asked me to see if I might find one Wal-Mart/ WMT marketplace. And here is the one I selected from the assortment I found.
We have not tried using the handstap through the window. That might actually be more helpful with getting up out of his compact car, but he fears the door / window frame might not stand up to weight of individuals he is transporting. If you have skinny 100lb little granny or a stronger heavy duty vehicle, that is maybe even more useful than the walking cane like handle part that was the searched for piece to begin with.
Came with 2 such handles. Can be one kept in front seat %26 other in back seat, or we have his car %26 2nd in my car.
BUT look to see which side of the door the latch loop is positioned on %26 how high up the door frame that is. Will a handle stuck in that spot actually help the person?
For us, passenger front seat, they are managing to swing feet out %26 handle is about waist high.
But back seat, not much help. Individuals have trouble getting feet swung out to begin with %26 then handle is more shoulder high requiring almost a chin up type strength. Here is where the other strap would likely be a help, but afraid the door is not going to hold up to the stress of hefty individuals pulling on it for long. Part of why he wanted it was to get away from the individual pulling on the front seat's headrest %26 the door arm handle.
Works GREAT if you have just one challenged individual %26 that person can be given front passenger seat, with seat adjusted to max leg room. IF it is a low to the ground compact car. A taller full sized sedan is probably great every which way. But Catch-22 of that is, it is compact cars elders most commonly need assistance getting out of, not so much a sedan.
Bottom line though -- especially if you dont already have a strap cutting / window breaking tool -- having one of these in your glove box or magazine pocket behind the seat is a good Elder Escape Tool on hand.
The handgrip design %26 easy to see/find standout bright color of this particular one is/was an ideal choice of all I looked at. Our only disappointed is related to our vehicle, not the product.
