I have the standard-smaller version+it's great, so I purchased the larger one for a friend as part of a wedding gift. He burns a lot of wood+ really loves this. It makes splitting decent size logs very simple, plus, his bride can use it easily w/out having to utilize an axe. It also ships really fast as well! A++++
Excellent heavy duty product. Each to use and quickly provides as much kindling as you want. Bought the regular one first and it did not have a big enough diameter and was not tall enough to accommodate the irregular logs that quite often come through my wood supply.
Super effective. I used to split kindling hunched over my splitting log, but I use The Kindling Cracker sitting down in the garage out of the elements. My lower back loves me. I can fill a 30 gal tote in 20 mins. If the wood's good, it'll split down to pencil size. Solid construction. Fully expecting this to outlive my kids. I actually look forward to using it. If you're considering it, buy it. If you're not, buy it just in case.
If you do any regular wood splitting for a fire pit or fireplace this thing makes it so mich easier and faster. I first used one at a rental cabin and couldnt believe how easy it made splitting wood, all the way down to kindling size. I'd recommend the XL. I accidentally ordered the smaller size fewl it's a bit too small for most logs.
Got the XL for Xmas and went out to the wood pile the next morning. It was a perfect crisp, sunny day with strong rays beaming off the snow. I'd taken down a small tree last year and stacked the rounds until I'd get around to splitting them with my splitting maul, but I was very excited to try out the Kindling Cracker and it was so much fun! I'd just plunk a log down with a little thud to anchor it on the blade and just a couple taps on the top and they'd pop. Before I even knew it I'd split everything and then was disappointed I didn't have more wood to process. Really love this tool!
This is the second one that I have bought. The last one was a gift. I have been using a standard splitting maul for decades, but where this one shines is with logs of small diameter (i.e., those that fit in the ring). With a three-pound hammer, you can sit and easily split anything from kindling to a wood stove to a campfire. This is made of heavy iron and stays put. Unlike a log splitter, you don't have to waste any time having to sharpen it. Two thumbs up for this buddy. Keep the splitting maul for the BIG STUFF. For the small stuff, use this and stay safe!
I moved to a mountain area three years ago. My home has a wood stove, and I've been so so challenged in building fires. The first year I bought pine and was about 50% successful building a fire. The second year I bought oak, and was about 10% successful. I was so frustrated. I bought this, broke those big chunks of oak into smaller pieces, and they burn like a charm. I'm 68, not that strong, but it doesn't take much with the maul to split the wood. I put the unit in a box so I don't have a big mess to clean up. This thing is great.
I purchased the Kindling Cracker XL a month or so ago and have used it a couple of times. It is easy to use and works as advertised. I've attached the Cracker to a small platform I made from 6" x 6" timbers I had, and I use a three pound sledge hammer. This works well to split quartered logs into kindling. I was previously using a splitting froe and hickory mallet. I like the Kindling Cracker much better.
I bought the smaller version of the Kindling Cracker XL and I really love it. I am 74 years old and I have heated entirely with wood for the past 20 years. I usually have to split the kindling by hand and that means close contact with a small sharp hand axe. With the Cracker I can put a piece of wood on the splitter area and use the back of the axe to hit the wood and split it into small pieces. I do not have to worry about cutting my fingers when I hold a small piece of wood. The Cracker does the job really well! The kindling falls to the side and I can use it easily. The only problem I see is that I cannot split a long piece of wood if it does not split. It gets struck on the splitting wedge and the log is touching the bottom of the support structure. It took a while to get it unstuck.. I had to turn everything upside down and hit the wood from the bottom to get it loosened. Shorter wood works great..!! Thanks, it has made things much easier for me. I bought the XL size for my son for Christmas. Will have to wait to see how he and his family like it. I would recommend it to any one.. my grandkids could use it without fear that they would cut a finger when they split kindling.
Excellent product- but I won't be shopping with NT again. The package arrived clearly wrapped in post purchase clear tape. The box was battered but the contents were intact….mostly…when taking the product out we could see a large chip in the foot. It was not damaged in the shipping and clearly happened prior. The product still works fine- it is just amazing that they would repackage someone else's damaged return and send it to us as a new purchase.
