The Apollo Lands In My Engine Bay

Pitbull April 24, 2026

I have an 04 Mazdaspeed MX-5 with a slightly bigger turbo than stock and I have been struggling with high intake temps for several months now. In the mornings the car is peppy and responsive. In the late afternoon it loses that pep and I can feel the drop in power. My intake temps were as high as 170f while it was 72f outside but, would mostly be in the 140's with my charge air temps in the 180-190's with ambient temps in the mid 50's to low 60's. After installing the Apollo and driving for about 2 hours in 62f sunny weather my intake temps were mostly in the 70's. They would creep to the mid 80's when stopped at a light but as soon as I started rolling, the intake tubing, which is routed to the center opening by the inter cooler, would start drawing in cool air and the temps would drop quickly. Unlike before where even after cruising for a bit at 35-45mph my intake temps would barely drop because I was feeding my turbo hot engine bay heat. Not so good. One thing to keep in mind for NA and NB Miata owners who have an Air Intake Temp sensor is that the 5 different sensor fittings that come with the Apollo did not fit the Air Intake Temp Sensor from my car. I made a hole and added a rubber grommet for my sensor at the coupling piece of the Apollo right before the filter. I would highly recommend an enclosed cold air system like the Apollo if you're struggling with high intake temps like I was. So far, this thing is working. My car felt just as peppy in the late afternoon as it does in the morning. Some more testing needs to be done. I'm curious to see how it does when the ambient temps hit the 80's. I will say, that after driving for 2 hours today, I popped the hood and put my hand on the filter housing to see how much heat it drew and I was surprised that it was just warm to the touch. Admittedly, I do have a partial air-box mounted that seals against the hood which helps keep temps low.
