Best e-ink device so far!

Kaley December 10, 2024

I'd been looking into getting an e-ink device for several months, and after reading different reviews online I was deciding between the reMarkable 2, the Amazon Kindle Scribe, and this Kobo Elipsa 2e. I tried all three (in that order) and the Kobo has so far been the only one that fulfilled everything I was looking for in one device. I have been using it for about a week now and find the screen to be very responsive, the stylus writes smoothly (sometimes a bit TOO smooth in my opinion - feels more like writing on an iPad than an e-ink screen- but still a nice feel). You can take notes directly on a book or article which I appreciate (something the Kindle Scribe didn't allow) or make a "sticky note" by highlighting a word and inserting more text on the side. The one drawback I've seen with this is that the sticky note function only lets you type on the screen's keyboard instead of writing with the stylus. I wish it would allow you to insert a note and then write on it (or at least have that option) but I have found that the margins of the book are mostly sufficient for the things I want to note or highlight and don't use the sticky note function much. I love that you can connect to your library using a library card and look for books that way (something I couldn't do on the reMarkable 2)! Between the Kobo store and my library via OverDrive, I've been able to find almost any book I was looking for (though not ALL). One problem I started experiencing yesterday is when trying to navigate via the table of contents in one of my downloaded books, I'll click on a chapter and the screen will go blank and be unresponsive. I'm not sure at the moment if this is an issue with the e-book or if something is lagging or glitching on my Kobo device. I'm also not a fan that the device shows the title of the last book you had open when the device is powered off - I would rather it just be a blank screen. Overall, though, it's been great and I hope it will last me a long time!

Better than a Scribe for ethical reasons alone

but of a learning curve with navigation but the ability to scribble notes and convert to texts is very cool. Also YAY not Amazon!
