If you're not a master knife sharpener this is the only way to go. I own 2 sets and I leave my Japanese and Chinese cleaver razor sharp along with my skinning knife. Don't use this on ceramic knives need the diamond stones. Use an old tooth brush and a dab of dawn dish washing liquid and scrub clean under warm water after using your stones each time, ready to go and sharpen next knife or air dry and store. You tube video a must on how to properly use the Lansky system. MUST have are the stand and/or C-Clamp, I have both but prefer the C-Clamp. You won't be disappointed with this item as I mentioned before I own 2 and planning on just getting the diamond hones for ceramic knives. MADE IN THE U.SA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 by an American company by American workers.
This is my second sharpening system, the other one was 30 years old and very well worn. I've tried the competitions' system and the sharpening arms were too short for me. I constantly was disengaging the blade. However, there's a problem. Be prepared as anyone that knows your knives, will ask you to sharpen there's.
This product will sharpen just about any blade in your house and give it an edge better than the one the factory put on when you bought your knife. The Lansky kit is, in a word, perfect. The product is made in America and the quality difference between this and foreign-made sharpeners is evident the first time you use it. If you are a knife enthusiest like I am, you can't afford to not have a Lansky kit in your home.
Some have complained about having to straighten the guide rods but that is easy using a flat surface. Make sure you do it otherwise you will round off the bevel you are working on. I just wish the clamp had a notch for consistency. When dramatically changing an angle it took quite a bit of work but had to disassemble for safe storage between sessions. Did not quite go back together precisely. Instructions refer to such a notch but mine does not have it.
works very well on small pocket / kitchen knives. anything more than about 3 inches and it becomes increasingly difficult to get an even edge. another draw back are the rods which bend very easy, get caught in the angle holes when trying to sharpen a rounded edge, and often come loose from the tightener bolts.... the coarse stones seem to loose much of their coarseness after putting edges on knives without edges at all. if you are just sharpening a blade that has already been sharpened before, this is a great system. if you make small knives i suggest zero grinding your bevels before sharpening. will make your life a hundred times easier. practice alot on spare knives first. wrap the edges of the clamp in electrical or painters tape, it is prone to scratching your knife (also very hard to keep straight in the clamp)
I ordered this new Lansky because I gave my son my "old" one. It is such a simple system that anybody can sharpen a knife razor sharp. It's pretty much fool proof if you follow the instructions.
I liked this item. Would advise to watch a few Lansky videos on proper usage. Being a guy I figured I could figure it out. I still managed to get a few knives sharpened. Then watched some videos and found I was kinda backwards. Works much better when you do it proper. The directions were in several languages. And pretty brief. I'm telling you, watch the videos.
I am a beginning woodcarver ,long time knife owner and this sharpens better than factory , razor edge every time. perfect , I followed the directions on the box and I get the sweetest ,long lasting edge for carving ever. Work great on all my other knives as well...Highly recommended !!
The stones are very fragile.. Do not drop them (talking from experience here). cannot do most of the kitchen knifes with a single pass, so getting an even sharpness is not that easy.. with practice, you can get a decent sharpness..
I have owned this product before. Lansky sharpeners work great, producing a hair shaving edge, even for beginners(like me) by maintaining a consistent knife edge/sharpening stone angle.
