LEGO 6137063 Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator Building Kit - 3929 Piece

I purchased this for my 6 year old son who was able to construct it with only minimal assistance throughout the build. Impressive being his second lego set. That's my proud parent rant complete. During the build some CRC 808 silicone spray was applied to all the gears and drive shafts. This would appear to have made an incredible difference when looking through others feedback, plenty of power and never any jamming issues. Hope this tip helps. To mine coffee beans a small piece of paper was put between the bucket wheel chute and conveyor belt to stop them falling between and jamming up the works.

This set is amazing, however, there's a problem. When I finally built this after 4 days, (don't judge me (>_<)) I started the motor and flicked the switch... Only to find the wheel periodically stopping and starting. It also slowed down a lot. I remade the gearbox (pack #7) and it ran at normal speed... Only now, after a restart, it slowed down and it returned to what it was like before I remade it. I have a video that I recorded for reference attached.

After not building any Lego for over 25 years I decided to buy this set and build with more daughter after we both admired it in a toy shop for many months. I agonised over buying it thinking it was too expensive but in my opinion the enjoyment of the build with my Daughter has been worth every cent. I must say I knew it would be big but once it all comes together it is huge!! The instruction book is huge and daunting at first but the clear instructions made most of the build a breeze. I did make a few little mistakes along the way but I believe it was just excitement of wanting to get this mammoth built! My only advice would be every time you complete a section with gears is to check they move freely and as intended as if you don't and have to go digging to solve it and can be a mission with many of the gear systems buried deep in layers. Once together and powered up there was a bit of playing around to see which gears drove what and how it all worked. The buckets could be a little more effective at picking the Lego rocks up and occasionally they spill out of the buckets or come off the conveyor belts. In summary, my Daughter and I both loved building this and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is not sure if it is worth the purchase price.

I'm new to the lego world and want to commend the designers of this set! It is an awesome build, well laid out and it just amazes me with the amount of detail they put into this set. I am halfway done and cannot wait to finish and let my son play with it, he has been helping along the way with the organizing parts for the specific steps. I love the transmission and gear layout it really was fun for us to put them together and making sure they move smoothly. Great jobs guys! Ken

Well, having just finished the build, I can say this is a truly worthy 'Flagship' Technic set. First of all - the build. I took over 1 week, just building sections at a time. The parts come in numbered bags (1-8), thank you Lego - this really does help building. The instructions are in one HUGE book. The sections of the instructions relate to the bags. Two nice inovations in these instructions. Where small parts are added to a large section of the model, white outine 'windows' are added to highlight where the parts go - nice touch! Also, on one or two pages, the main model is greyed out, leaving only a section in plain colour to highlight the new parts. Very good! At the end of the instructions the controls are explained. This layout is also new - and very clear. The build is complex. I managed to make a mistake on stage 4; and had to dismantle the model to put in a missed out gear wheel. I managed this twice! So; check that the axles and gears are connected and doing something before proceeding! A small criticism is that, on the build of the bucket arm (stage 6), the conveyor belt support structure is rather weak until the re-inforcing side is finished. Care is needed with this stage not to bend or break parts. When complete the structure is very strong. Also adding the bucket arm to the main structure is fiddly. Four hands might help with this stage! When complete the kit is really impressive. I particularly like the attention to detail in this kit. Not only an operators cabin, but ladders, walkways, and lights are added all over the model. It adds a sense of scale and completeness to the model. Value for money? Yes! Although expensive you do get a lot for your money. Apart from the fun building and playing with the set, there are a huge number of parts. I would certainly recommend this set to anyone who likes Technic Lego.

Some steps (of the roughly 670 steps) were somewhat difficult and there were about 5 small pieces (of more than 1,000) missing but I was able to steal some pieces from my other Lego projects to properly finish. The end product looked great and functioned partially.

It would have been a five star product if one tiny piece that was essential to building this thing was missing from the set. I had to order it from Lego customer service so my little girl has to wait until it arrives to finish her excavator.

This model has kept me occupied for more than 20 hours building, and at times it has been quite the slog, something I've never found before with any Lego model. The model itself is technically brilliant, the selection gearbox to select the different operations is a real masterpiece. However having so many gears in the system gives a lot of backlash and drag, which leaves the motion jerky. The use of clutch gears was essential to prevent jams from burning out the motor, but they leave the assembly underpowered. In times gone by this model would have had several motors closer to each operation, connected to a control board which would have made the motion smoother. I'm undecided on the riot of colour now used in technic models to make piece identification easier. Finding the right piece and crosschecking the length (or just making so many models you knew sizes by experience) was part of the challenge of Technic. This feels a bit like the dumbing-down after a focus group. For me, it falls short of the best ever Lego Technic set, the T-Rex

I like all the mechanisms and all the gears. When I was on the page 192 and I noticed that one of the 6089119 elements was missing. That specific element is one of the things I don't have at my disposal. The part is quite rare and that makes my building experiance bad. For the amount of money you pay, you should get all pieces + some extra pieces.

I was excited to buy it, and I loved building it. I heard that it was cumbersome with the Power Functions XL motor, but that didn't matter to me. However, after building it and getting it up to speed, I found that it really isn't that fast or powerful. The motor glitches occasionally, it creeps and rotates excruciatingly slowly, and when attempting to dig any Legos, the wheel stops. This needs a more powerful motor to be able to use. Since Lego doesn't make a more powerful motor than what's included, you're stuck. All of the PF concerns aside, it looks fantastic. I would still recommend it for the building experience and the sheer size and presentation of the finished product.
