The Downtown Diner is one of the most fascinating building experiences I've had. When I first saw this set two years ago, I was heavily turned off by it's style & colour, especially the shades of pink. But over time as I've viewed it more often (and since purchasing and completing the Diner) I have become incredibly fond of the structure. There's plenty of side-building techniques -almost everywhere on the front exterior. It has both an intriguing style and design: the spiral staircase 'round the back; the windows that just slot in; the pink lettering; and of course the white/pink/teal barrier that runs from the far right of the building around to the back stairway. As always with the modulars, I'm impressed with the little details included in the set: The juke box, the gum machine, the water-cooler etc. The car, clearly mirroring a Cadillac of some description looks great and better still it's able to hold up to three minifigures. Most unusual for a six-stud-wide car. The minifigures are very suitable to the whole theme - very 'Grease' like. Overall, the layout of the building with its interior & exterior colour, design and shape makes this a fine & authentic Lego set.
My first creator expert kit purchased. I was dazzled by the bright 50s colour and Americana. It's a beautiful kit and my daughter enjoys playing with the minifigs and guitar, dumbells and pink Chevy. The detail in the gym, with a water dispenser is just gorgeous!
A great addition to the range of buildings, and to do it in a period style is fantastic. I love the juke box, the gumball machine and the inventive construction techniques to get that iconic design. And it was so good to see more of the surface area of the base plate taken up with building, instead of empty space. Very good!
Really fun build! The detail in this build is so good. Took about 7 hours with a couple of breaks in between. The attention to detail is brilliant with some novel techniques used. Instructions easy to follow and looks amazing when completed I added a Marty McFly minifigure as it reminds me of the Diner in Back to the Future! Loved building this and looks amazing when completed. Worth the price tag
This is the first modular building I have ever purchased and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed building it. there's so many little details that just really make the building. And it has alot of play features that my daughter loves she couldn't wait for me to finish making it so we could start playing with. Over all a great build and a great building.
This particular modular building has a lot of great things going for it; the diner itself on the main floor was detailed, and fun to build. Wish they'd given a stud for a stack of pancakes on the table to attach. The gym above that was a simpler design, but still has enough detail to enjoy building this level, though it was a bit of a tight fit for some positioning/play. Again, I do wish they'd given a stud for the boxer to attach to on the actual boxing ring. The recording studio on the top was probably one of my favourite parts. The detail that went into making sure it was as accurate as possible is impressive. Some other nice details were the opening skylight, and the spiral staircase at the back. The pièce de résistance for me was the pink Caddy. I won't lie, my wife may or may not have wanted this set just for the car. Overall, a great addition to any city, and a must have for any modular building fan. Like I said, just would have been nice to have some studded flats to attach certain things to.
I've just got the first two sets of bags assembled. I really like the Diner signage. Tile usage to make the sign uses techniques I've never seen before. Read online where some don't like the use of non-traditional faces on the figures . . . Really? If that bothered me, I have a couple hundred old-style faces I could replace them with. Overall this set is one of my favorites. I put it up there with the Detective's Office. It's whimsical and has lot's of interior detail. Every year I look forward to getting the latest modular building. I've managed to get all of them and my Lego Town grows a little each year. It keeps a very old kid happy. Thanks Lego for keeping the modulars going!
This is the first Creator Expert set I've bought and I'm nit disappointed. Some of the building techniques used in this build were really creative and outstanding. Overall I'd say it was worth my money, even makes me consider purchasing a second building to go along with it.
I love the details that Lego put into this modular set and I hope they keep this up. I decided to start my own Lego City and hope to add more modular sets in the future. The Diner had some unique building techniques that I found interesting and a little challenging at times. I find it funny that Lego included a gym, but I guess Lego figured if you go to a greasy spoon that you should work it off afterwards. The recording studio was an unique addition as well and is well detailed. The one gripe that I have is that I wish the cups had SNOT , so that would stay in one place when the set is moved from one place they would. I usually don't comment on playability, but the Diner and the Palace Cinema to me would have plenty of playability for children. I even find myself at 53 posing the minifigures in order to take unique pictures which brings me back to my own childhood. I recommend to anyone who only has money for one modular building to purchase the Diner first. You won't be disappointed.
This is the first set I've build in at least five years. It was great. I didn't build all of it. My friend built the majority of the second floor but I built the rest of it. My favorite part was building the little juke box, and the counter top. The whole build was fun in general. None of it was too tedious, so that's a plus.
