I'm late to party with this one but I still enjoyed building it including the tricky parts. I am always amazed at how intricate the builds are! The hidden but very important bits of the whole structure. Bits have fallen off when people have tried to handle it but easy enough to reattach. i also have a mini version and they both sit nicely together with some of my other builds.
when i bought this set looking at the box it seemed like it would be a very straightforward build. this was not the case and i was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the inner portions. The seats alone took almost 30 minutes due to the detail. The bonnet of the car was also surprisingly tricky to get on. Only thing i don't really like is the surf board and lunch cooler, however those are also optional to have on it.
Bought this recently to go with my creator expert Camper and wasn't disappointed. I love cars and have a soft spot for old air cooled VW's so was inevitable really. Great fun build and looks awesome when finished and put on display. If your thinking about buying this stop thinking and buy it now.
A gift from my wife on my birthday. Pros: classic VW beetle, big size and great details, great color, and the set has car numbers of several regions. It makes people thinking of a picture of cozy and peaceful life after ww2. Cons: lack of engine details, I understand this is not Technik series, but if the engine for a car would make this set to a higher stage.
My late father had a VW Beetle back in the 70's when I was a young child so I have many fond memories of Herbie! A Beetle was also my wife's first car when she was 18, so there is a lot of nostalgia here! The build was easy to follow and rock solid from the tilting seats, the opening doors, engine compartment and front storage section. Nice touches such as the speedometer, gear stick and handbrake and the all important cool box with bottles, can and ice! Surfboard was also cool and this looks great alongside my T2 Camper Van.
Took just over 3 hours to build with a couple of drink breaks!! Absolute phenomenal the way the beetle goes together. Great to be used for display purposes!!
It all started between that weird period between Christmas and New Year, when your not really sure what to do, we planned a shopping trip to Center MK for the day. After some lunch and a little window shopping we popped in to the Lego store to spend some of that Christmas money. I walked through the door and looking at the sets and did my normal "yeah that's nice, yeah one day darling, well you'll have to see for your birthday!" Then I see it, as the crowd seperated through a little window I see the distinctive shape of the VW Beetle. My eyes were glued to it, I push women and child out of the way to get closer. After about 5 minutes of trying to explain to my partner how cool this is she said "why don't you get it, you love helping the kids with theirs". "Don't be silly I'm 34 I can't buy Lego for myself" "why not?" she replied, it of seemed like forever but over in second as the adult part of my brain and the child side were in a fight to the death. Then the excitement really started to build as I instinctively grabbed the box marched to the till and stood there patently waiting to be served, leg tapping and a little impatient bobbing up and down like I really need to go to the toilet. Proudly in my VW jacket. I gave the young lady the set with a beaming smile, I'm sure she could sense my excitement "would you like a bag sir?" (she could of said young man and i wouldnt of noticed) "No thank you" (the adult part of my brain and to step in after losing the last round, after all the contents are all ready in there own form of a carrier!). So after finally buying a Lego set for myself after 20 years of being a grown up, I started with this set. I was walking around the shopping centre like a child carrying my big box of Lego, making sure people didnt get too close, eagled eyed for that potential theif. I couldn't wait to get home. The drive seemed to take forever every Sunday driver, every slow pony pulling out in front of you or not pulling out in the case of junctions. 1 hour 10 minutes later we arrived home. All the normal rules and procedures which I normally sound like a Sergeant Major "shoes off, put them away!" "Coats off, hang them up" all forgotten (the kids where in shock, but this gave me the advantage of the prime space on the dining room table). I opened the box (coat still on) to find Lego has changed and for the better. I used to open a box and have one big bag of bricks, studs and any special pieces fall everywhere and invariably loose some under the fridge! However now neatly numbered bags nice one I thought, but the greatest surprise is the handy tool for fixing any errors, about time I thought I've swallowed a couple one bricks and studs in my time, perfect I thought. So I started to build. I won't go in to the details of how I did it, after all you only follow the instructions, but five hours later I stepped back and admired my genius, I am a Lego builder again. What a great set to start with and now as I write this review (my first as you can probably tell!) I'm looking at my next conquest the VW T1 Camper Van. I'm hooked... :)
I really wanted to get the original Beetle that Lego produced, but kept on putting it off because it proved to be too expensive on the used market. So when I saw this was being released, I jumped at it. The Pieces: The first thing that struck me about this model is the amount of new pieces in it. As I'm sure most AFOL's do, I have a pretty good idea, with every set I buy, how many pieces are new to me; either in just a new colour, or a new piece all together. The amount of dark blue azure pieces is incredible, and makes this set fun from a "Hey! I don't have THAT piece!" point of view. I would have liked to see more printed elements and less stickers, but that's a pretty small gripe. The Build: The instructions and numbered bags were all pretty standard. I noticed that the pages of the book felt much thinner than usual. Maybe a weird thing to notice, but I found myself having to be a bit careful not to rip the pages. During the build itself I found myself being surprised many times with the building techniques used. This model is full of clever SNOT (Studs Not On Top) techniques, and many keys areas of the model have pieces in three different directions. The way that the back rest on the back seat goes together is something I have never seen before, and was completely unaware that those pieces could fit like that. The finished model: When compared to the T1 Camper, it seems a bit larger in scale, but all in all it's a great addition to the collection. All the moving bits work very well, and the surfboard, picnic basket, and the blanket make for a fun display model. In conclusion, I'd say that this model is not only a must have for fans of Lego cars, but this is also a great model for a collector who geeks out about new pieces and clever building techniques. I'm sure I'll be finding myself pulling this one apart every so often and building it again.
This Lego set is one of the best! I bought it when it was for VIP's only. I love this Lego set! When my mom came home I showed her my collection. My Mom was like wow! I enjoyed building it a lot! This set was very easy for me to build. I think I might get the Porsche next. I love Lego!
I bought it when I was in vacation in legoland last week. At the moment I saw the box, I knew I would buy it. When I got back home, I started building it. It is so much fun, especially doing it with my daughter together. She has lots of sets in friend series and started her first set when she was around 2 years old. Every part is well produced. All the bags were labeled in number 1, 2, and 3. Each component of the car is well designed and brings lots of fun to myself and my daughter. She has been playing it with some minifigures for two days. There were two things I had while I was building it. First, the rubber string or timing belt of the engine. It doesnt drive the parts when I rotate one of them. It would be much better and playable if the engine could be more complex. Second thing is for some reason, one of the grey roof tile is missing. I checked every bag and my work table and could not find it. I eventually used one of the my daughter's spare rood tiles to fill it in.
