LEGO Iconic Chess Set Set LEGO 40174

I bought this set a week ago, it took me 2 hours to put all the pieces together. Although the pieces can fall over very easily as long as you press them down tightly it works out, it was also really cool that it doesn't take up that much storage. I would recommend this product to people who are learning to play chess as the booklet shows you what moves each piece can make.

What a great Set, I modified some of the chess pieces a wee bit, like the ears on one of the knights sideways, looks like a cow :-) Or I put a R2 head on one of the pawns, my son was like: "what's this star wars spy doing here?" :D

I built this with my 8 yr old son. We had fun building and playing. It was relatively simple to build but the result was stunning. A playable Lego set for any age.

I love having a lego set with so much replay value. The build was straight forward. We really enjoyed modifying the chess pieces to make them smaller/more streamlined (i.e. easier for gameplay/maneuverability) without losing out on some of the very pretty detailing (the knight's horse ears are adorable, and the bishop is particularly cleverly constructed). Amazing value for the number of pieces. We've played several games on it so far and everything holds up very well. The storage aspect of it is also quite clever/appreciated. Overall, as two lego and chess geeks, we're very satisfied.

Amazing chess set. Simple to build. I had a great time with my son with building and playing after. He won but I'm not good chess player XD A small minus for checkers - they should join together (one checker above the other)

My son and I enjoyed building this set. It took us several hours. Being able to use it to play a game of chess after was a bonus.

This is the most playable Lego chess set that they have ever made. The board could be a bit bigger to match the height of the tall pieces. I enjoyed putting the pieces together so much that I reverse the highlights just for fun. Perhaps with the recent popularity of chess (thanks to NetFlix) there would be new sets coming for us Chess and LEGO enthusiasts.

I think that this was a brilliant set with two flaws one of which being that it is quite repetitive and when you are putting down a piece sometimes it falls of or is not centred but apart from that it is great and it has a wonderful value for money!

This is a solid Chess set don't get me wrong, but what happened to the minifigures?? I always loved the Castle themed Chess game with all the minifigures filling in the rolls for the King, Queen Pawn, etc. Hopefully that isn't a bygone era.

I'm a big fan of chess, and when I saw this I had to get it. It ended up being quite annoying and repetitive to build to the point where I just didn't want to finish building it for a month. It doesn't look very good in my opinion. It's difficult to tell pieces apart at first glance. Its not good as a decoration, and actually playing chess on it is difficult as the pieces don't stay on the board. The upside is that there is a place to store pieces inside the board, but even that is imperfect. You have to pry the baseplates off of the top of the board to access the inside, and putting them back on requires pressing hard. Overall, I regret my purchase.
