This is one of those beautiful sets I would see at the store and say, "I'll get it when I've saved up a bit more." Thankfully, the opportunity came up, just as I saw it was retiring soon. It's everything I hoped it would be - majestic, colorful, gorgeously detailed, and a great build. It has some pieces I've never seen before in nearly 25 years of building (and reflective stickers - that's wild!), the construction method is fascinating and innovative, and the mini figures are awesome. It's now proudly displayed on our kitchen island (it's quite large at 46 inches long - make sure you have space!) One of my very favorite sets - a pleasure worth every penny. Now's your chance!
Ever since I can remember I have had a fascination with The Orient Express, from Agatha Christie's novel to the various dramatisations. From the glitz to the glamour, to the luxury and opulence; The Orient Express sparked my love for sleeper trains. The set went together beautifully, easy to follow instructions, exceptional attention to detail and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. One of my favourite builds in a very long time.
Such a cool build. If your into 100% exact detail it may not suit you. For me I really like this set. I don't usually buy sets when they come out, but this one I did. Would be nice to see Lego bring out a motor combo for this without having it modify it. Thanks for another great product Lego.
Added Hub #88009 and train motor #88011 this required slight modification to the coal tender to fit them both in. The coal tender is the right size to fit both but requires the middle 4x6 plate in the bottom to be removed to let the cable through, you also need to fit 2 Motorbogie ornaments #6256101 to each side of the motor with a 1x4 plate #371026 and a 1x6 plate #366626 to each of them to get the correct height once the motor is attached. Also requires replacement of the coupling between the Train engine and the coal tender with 2 Train Buffers #6172149 otherwise it won't corners correctly. The coupling between the carriages seems to work fine so doesn't need replacing. The only other issue I had was with the wrong sticker sheet 2 of 2 which had yellow stickers and not the gold ones that should have been. The part number for the correct sticker sheet is #6511051. The train works well with the remote or the powered up app as long as you connect the motor to port A on the Hub you can use any of the powered up trains in the app.
I was so excited to purchase this set upon hearing it was due for release, I ordered it the day it came out! This set was a Christmas and birthday present to myself and I have enjoyed a very gradual build of the set taking my time with it and enjoying all the details. The interiors are very well done and the overall scale is spot on! I love all the characters travelling on the train and the nod to Pippin Reed was sweet (I enjoyed the Adventurers sets too when I was little). As a long time Lego train fan this is a fantastic addition to the collection, sitting proudly alongside the Metroliner, Santa Fe, Emerald Night, Crocodile Locomotive and others. As mentioned, the attention to detail is fantastic, right down to the inclusion of boiler fire tubes represented by Technic bricks, not something most would notice or appreciate, I thought that was very clever. To top it off it runs on Lego tracks. It's a great set and in my opinion the best Lego set released for a long time, certainly the best I have built for a long time. Lego even supplied me replacement stickers as the ones the came with the set were yellow not gold, brilliant. Keep it up Lego!
Well, what can I say!. This set is stunning in every way, anyone that receives or buys this set will not be disappointed. The details in the actual train and carriages awesome, the figures perfect. It would have been a complete set of stars only for playability as I believe this set more suited for display.
Looks much better in-person than what I initially heard. The details are amazing and fits both as a display and a good Lego train in general. Only issue is the price, as it's a bit high for what it's worth. But all in all, it's an overhated set that's actually pretty neat
I love Lego, I love trains and I love history. So this set was right up my street. I don't mind that it's not motorised as I'm using it for display only. My only real complaint is the spelling mistakes on the place names (however I think LEGO will be rectifying this and hopefully sending out replacements) I do think the price point is too high, but overall I'm happy with my experience and purchase.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Orient Express is a beautiful set that will look great on your shelf. Just make sure it's long enough! Even though it's an 18+ set, it has tons of play potential with 8 mini-figures, and you have easy access to the interior of the carriages. The building experience starts on a low point with the platform. It's a repetitive build and tends to warp due to the long parts. Next up is the first carriage, and the fun begins. There are plenty of great details and interesting techniques, and the interior looks stunning. Both the roof and windows are easily removable for convenient access. The wheels look realistic, and the build is intricate and technical. Hats off to the designer, as the wheels have been built to handle curves very well, even though the platform is straight. Most of the second carriage is identical to the first, so the build is a bit repetitive. Luckily, the interior is completely different from the first carriage, and the level of detail is just as good. The tender was surprisingly fun to build, and the wheel solution has a genius touch. The locomotive has some great details and looks good, but it appears a bit basic compared to the original Ideas submission. All in all, a very good-looking model with lots of details and play potential.
This set is very pretty but has a lot of issues. The printed elements on the boiler are very inconsistent. The new rods are made from a softer plastic which makes them bend and jam frequently. Rubber bands on the driving wheels should've been included. The front pilot wheels on the loco derail after a few laps of runnings, and because of their rubbery material they don't spin freely. The carriages are well built and nicely decorated. However, I wish the set included the older style of train wheels with the metal axle as it would've made the whole train run smoother. These newer, weaker plastic axles are why the weight of train makes it difficult to power. I also don't see the need for a base, I would've happily bought the set without it. The base is very flimsy and the rails bend awkwardly at the tip of each end - felt like an unnecessary addition. Overall, I did appreciate the set for its new elements and size, but felt there were too many faults from making it a truly great set.
