This unit is brilliant !! It's not just a reciever, but also a twin controller unit. It has 2 separate subchannels for each of the 4 main channels. This way it will control 2 motors or 1 motor and lights on a train, or any two powerfunction units. As a "train-o-holic" this unit along with the other controls is a MUST for powering and controlling modern lego IR trains. I wish that lego would make a SET with the necessary items for powering trains: 8884 IR reciever 8879 IR speed remote control 8870 lights 88002 train motor 88000 battery box (or alternately, 8878 rechargable battery box and 8887 charger) And then give us a reasonable rebate on the whole deal, since we already have bought a train. {;o)
It's well built and reliable, just still looks it has ancient technology so Lego could think of getting new motorised systems for the future. I works fine but still on batteries. The Horizon Express train CREATOR EXPERT SET doesn't come with power functions included so had to buy it. I found it too expensive, you could have made a Pack set for this and all other equipment with the train above mentioned.
It is incredibly usefull in all remote control vehicles, with a rage of around 5 meters inside, but fails to work at all in strong sunlight. this can be fixed by making a large-ish square out of lego and having it a bit above it, and gives it a range of 1-2 meters in strong sunlight. Should work with out a hat when used in less sunny days, but the hat still improves range.
I purchased this to go with the winter train and it fits perfect and now I can control it with the remote I will be purchasing more soon so I can control other motors and switches on the train track thanks lego
This is a very good Piece of equipment, if you just have a motor and a battery box and looking into making your models RC this would be very helpful, It has about a 25-30 Foot range Indoors, and about a 15-20 Out doors. This has been a fan loved piece so there where three types, Most people don't know about that this one had a older one it looked the same and acted similar, It had a 10-15 Foot range inside and about 10 foot range outdoors, I would recommend buying it from a place like LEGO because they are only selling the 'Newer' one, The V2 Featured in the Rock crawler has better battery to motor power usage, so the motors spin the same speed but the battery uses less power, I have the V2 and I think it has a little better range (though I haven't tested it yet) I can't say what to do right now, Wait and get the newer one (though it isn't much better then this one) Or just have this one Because we don't know if this could come out in a day or a year it is a hard choice. Value for money is excellent, $12 to make awesome RC models is totally worth it. They do break after about 3 years I have just had my oldest one pass its life time. Play, Wow all I can say is that these make your model that much better. They are so fun whether it is from Driving your LEGO train around the Christmas tree, to Driving your LEGO Jeep outside this is perfect for every place. Unlike most of the PF parts I don't know if this is water proof, the motors are and I have tested them but I don't want to test this. Mainly for Technic building, it has two front Pin holes then the rest of it is studded. The video I attached is of my Jeep I built and it is showing my Technic model using this part. This is outdoors and I am about 10 feet away at the time.
I like these remote receivers. They're fairly compact (about the size of an old mini motor) and each one can control 2 functions. They also have 4 channels. They're quite handy, especially for moving objects or things where you couldn't easily access a power switch. I do wish the reception was a touch better, but it works fine as long as you point the remote straight at the receiver. Definitely a good buy.
This is way cool! Who would of thought to make a remote and reciver for LEGO motors? I play and build with my M-motor,IR Reciver, battery box and remote control(read my reviews on these too)all the time. Compared to item #8287 Motor Box set the wires are much better on all the Power Functions toys. If you are looking at price they both cost about the same if you buy a M-motor,IR Reciver, battery box and remote control. So if you also need extra parts with your motor get #8287. If you just want motors and such you should get Power Functions.
This is an essential set if you want any remote control. BUT!! The current output is vastly limited --> You cannot run any of two PF motors from one slot. Of course, you can workaround this problem with two IR receivers, assigning each PF motors to each IR receivers. But you need two controllers to actually power two motors at the same time. --> a waste of resource. I know that V2 partially solves the problem but you can't get them unless you purchase the retired product: 4x4 Crawler from an aftermarket. I'm not sure why LEGO isn't still phasing this V1 receiver out while V2 was released 4 yrs ago...
I bought four receivers, expecting by now that Lego would be shipping v2 of the receiver that does not restrict power to the motors like v1 ( The v2 receiver has been around a while with the 9398 crawler). Can Lego please make v2 available for purchase and state in the description the version so that we know what we are purchasing.
The receiver its self works fine but after a year or much sooner the cable will break. If you have lots of money you can probably afford a new one. Also very over over priced.
